I have a problem (existed now since KDE 5.2 or something.
The chromium can not open "Save File" dialog at all. It just doesn't appear. So I am incapable to save files or so.
The "Open file" dialog works, so I can actually select files for upload.

I have renamed the Chromium settings directory and settings away from user directory, no help.
Only way to get the dialog work is to rename whole .kde directory or simply create a new account.

But then after a while the problem returns and I can't download anything. And it is not about extensions either.

I am just so frustrated as I can't find out what is causing that Save File kdialog doesn't work with Chromium.

some thoughts:
if you're running 5.2 the 5 config files are in ~/.config

try temporarily removing the kdialog package

instead of removing the whole .kde folder try renaming ~/.kde/share/config/kdialogrc and ~/.config/kdialogrc

does Chrome have the same issue ?

checkout the Chromium and Chrome forums fo this issue

It is affecting all browsers like Chromium, Chrome and Opera.
The konqueror works fine, so does Epiphany. The GTK browser now makes sense it works, but not that Konqueror can open Kdialog to save files, but not above three ones.

I tried that kdialogrc renaming without success (logout, rename, login)

Oh and naturally I have latest versions of all that just Arch LInux offers. This problem just appears suddenly after a while and then doesn't go away.

Sorry for long delay to write reply.
Forgot to mention that it is a user problem as it doesn't affect new users. But even after a while new users start suffering from same problem.
I just can't find a way to track down this problem.

And I don't keep maximized browser window at all. Just a single window, tried system and native decorations, Kwin effects on/off etc.

Problem is really that it is affecting other browsers too.

Chrome, Chromium and Opera are all based on Chrome which points to a Chrome cause (or Chrome KDE interaction).

What is most strange is that you are using KDE 5 and removing ~/.kde, which is the KDE 4 folder, temporarily fixes it

You could try Chrome beta or unstable, guessing Vivaldi would have the same issue

What GTK themes are you using (no idea if it matters)? I use Oxegyn-gtk for both gtk2 and gtk3

Sorry, meant the .kde4 (just dislike the idea that we have .kde4 and .kde, should just be joined to same .kde)

Well, tried the Chromium-Dev without difference.

But it really is strange as I can't get any information from launching command line that there would be problems etc. Nothing just happens when clicking links or choosing "save as" etc.

Yes I have tested with others on same account, same problem.
But now something has been changed in Chrome updates, as Chrome (and Chromium) has started to give error messages (finally some progress from first party!).

This is now interesting, as for some reason the save/open dialogs opens up, but the browser runs as it would run from a another user permissions.
  • Htop lists that there are only two users process running, root and my account. And chromium processes belongs all to me.
  • But now when I try to save a file in Chromium, the bottom download bar pop-up and say "Failed - Insufficient space". I checked the home directory space and had plenty free space.
  • In Chromium "Downloads" page (that lists all downloads) it says this: "Cannot save due to insufficient permissions. Please save to another location." And if I right click link and select "save as" to other directory like a internal public drive (shared by multiple accounts, 777 permissions) then it says same thing about permission.
  • When I attach a USB stick and I try to save there (right click) it says same thing about permissions.
  • I managed to get a file saved couple days ago by some manner, thought that something was fixed. And I found that Chromium saved the file with a another user account permissions! The KDE file properties menu says ownership is my user in User and Group, but has grayed Access Permissions off. But then "ls -la" for the file says the owner and group and permissions belongs to another user on computer!
I have not read the chromium/chrome configuration files if there is something odd inside.

I can run Chromium on other accounts etc just fine, save and open files with correct permissions.
I just can't understand why Chromium tries to save files as another user permissions suddenly.

So not KDE but your account, but what/where

try renaming ~/.config/chromium and restarting the app, if you can save then something in your Chromium configs are bad

Doesn't help :-/

- Stop all chrome/chromium process
- Rename above ones
- Relogin

Still the permission error.
I just can't get this permission thing!
Like now last time when I tried to rename the Chrome/Chromium config directory and then reverse it, I lost all the history. And now it can't even write anymore history or even install any addon (tried to install new addon after long time) and it doesn't have any access to my home directory! :-D

you could check the rights to the folder or change the ownership to the entire ~/.config folder with:
Code: Select all
chown -R user_name ~/.config

or with Dolphin as Root -> right click folder -> properties -> permissions -> ownership, making sure to click "Apply Changes to all subfolders ...."

Are there no suggestions that work for this? Having just upgraded to Plasma 5 on Gentoo, I am now facing it. It is NOT only Chrome. It is a problem on any KDE app and any program that uses KDE's file dialog, even on LibreOffice until you change the dialog to use LibreOffice's own. Each application shows one of two behaviors: a crash or else clicking Save does nothing. New users do not experience this until they do, eventually. This problem is so common and so specific, there has to be at least a work-around, no?
