Hi
Are there any stats, or failing that any opinion, about how many users are still on KDE 4 vs the number migrated to KDE Plasma 5? This might be through repository download stats or browser agent stats or popularity apps or simple surveys. The Debian / Ubuntu popularity tools only report on package and don't distinguish platform version as far as I can tell. Is Debian Stable still on KDE 4? Among Kubuntu users I know quite a few who are still on 14.04 LTS even though 16.04 LTS is out and some find it stable. The reason for asking is (a) to get a feel for whether app and utility developers should still code for and test on KDE 4 ... and (b) to get a feel for whether us KDE 4 users are going to start losing out on new versions of major apps if developers don't have the time to code for KDE4 as well as 5! I wasn't able to find a thread about this - apologies if it has been asked. (Some threads about whether KDE 4 is better than KDE 5, but that's not my question). Thanks
I'd rather be locked out than locked in

Hello!
Here is the thread in Linux Mint KDE forum: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic. ... 6&t=223572 As you see, a number of users stated definitely, that they are going to skip Mint 18 LTS and stay on previous LTS Mint 17.3 if the former will use Plasma 5. I think it is common situation, because Plasma 5 still has some restrictions of functionality. It seems it is a good idea to keep at least testing new code on KDE 4 (and may be code for it) until all most common LTS distributions using it will expire. In case of Kubuntu/Mint it is April 2019. |
