Well KDE 5.x is now up to KDE 5.11 and *maybe* -- just *maybe* it is now almost as functionable as KDE 4.14. I hope someone can answer the following for me:
1) I can still create any number of Virtual Desktops. Yes?? Just making sure. 2) Can I NOW at long last assign each Virtual Desktop its own Wallpaper just as you can in KDE 4.14. If so HOW do you do it? 3) Can I NOW assign EACH Virtual Desktop it own set of Widgets and icons, just as you can in KDE 4.14. If so HOW do you do it? These are features that have been present in KDE Plasma 4 since around 4.6, and were steadily improved, and have been lacking in KDE 5.x though there was some sort of hint that you can now assign widgets to the desktop, though I might have misinterpreted the information, though I hope I did not. From a USERS perspective KDE 5.x has been a total disaster. USERS have set ways of doing things and developed skill sets which make them productive. What one does in KDE Plasma 4 one should be able to do in KDE 5, but so far that has not been the case. I can still have as many Virtual Desktops as I want, but I can't assign each Virtual Desktop it own Wall Paper; and each Virtual Desktop has the same set of icons and widgets. I now see see a LOT more YouTube videos but little to nothing on how to do common everyday tasks. There was one presentation that had no sound and the presenter raced through the presentation like a house on fire. A more organized presentation has be be made starting from scratch: This is KDE 5.x 1] this this the Desktop 2] This is the Panel 3] This is how to create Virtual Desktops 4] This is how to Assign a Different Wallpaper to Each Virtual Desktop 5] This is How to assign Different Widgets to each Desktop 6] Etc. I still have HOPES for KDE 5, but that I can't do the exact same things I can already do in KDE Plasma 4 makes the selling of the new goodies in KDE Plasma 5 irrelevant. The New Goodies should on top of, not replace, actions or activities that Users can already do in Plasma 4. Reinventing the wheel over and over is NOT a good thing. Up to this point KDE Plasma 5 so far is WAYYYY to complex to use because you can do simple things like assign Wallpapers to individual Virtual Desktops, or assign any given number of icons/widgets to each Virtual Desktop. I multitask and switch from one Virtual Desktop to another KDE Plasma looks too much like Windoze' cluttered desktop with opening things inside of things inside of things ie the "Container" approach rather than allowing one to spread things out across several Virtual Desktops. |

Short answer: Activities are the new Virtual Desktops. This has been the answer for all of the Plasma 5 releases (so far): Use activities for most usages; use VDs only if you need additional screen space for some Activity/ies. Changes and improvements have been made all along the way to try and make Activities as easy-to-use as VDs.

Should that have been NO hopes for KDE 5.
Fortunately I had no problem creating virtual desktops, and that's the way I want to work, Activities Bah no thanks. However I still keep loosing the applications menu, the desktop icons keep getting scrambled, I have finished up with a panel at the top and another at the bottom of the screen, and cannot get rid of the top one, also somehow I now have two clocks, one digital and one analog in the bottom panel and cannot get rid of the analog one. From my experience Plasma 5 should not have been released even as beta, its consuming too much of my life, My only way out is to keep using a somewhat broken KDE 4 system, no updates, but then no problems caused by them. I often find lots of other things (most softwares) to be better in older/previous versions and i'm very sorry to hear that KDE is among them. would like to know your opinion: do you think that KDE 4 is better than 5 overall? |
