Google Earth

Mon Oct 15, 2018 9:29 am
Hi all,

after descending from Apple s snow leopard I was forced to upgrade to the newer Os.
Absolute crab, I may as well try to work with windows.
The Amazon Linux wasn't to my liking either, so I started with Kde neon.

Nice move so far. Even I still miss having applications popping up at the bottom of the screen and lovely features like Expose and front row.
Well, you cant have it all.
Everything works two times faster with KDE on a 6 year old Macbook pro in comparison to High sierra.
Kde was very tricky to install on a Macbook though, but it works now.

Big problem left is that I work a lot with google Earth and it seems to be impossible to get running on KDE Neo.
I tried everything the net threw at me but no luck.
No Auto installer and no Konsole stuff.

Is there anybody out there who got Google Earth running on KDE and if, how did you get this accomplished?

Cheers

You mean the standalone Earth Pro I presume, as Google Earth can also be run in a browser:

Open earth.google.com, open the settings on the left and click on "Download to desktop".

Then choose the Linux .deb package for your system (there are 32 and 64 bit packages, choose the relevant .deb file one).

Once the download is complete you can click on the .deb file and the Package Manager should automatically start and guide you through the installation.

Just for completeness sake: you should try Marble, a great Earth simulation made by the KDE Community :-)

FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

:) Thanks a lot,

that is exactly what I did.
After double clicking it opens up in Dolphin for install, then an update follows... after that, not google earth nowhere...

And where do you look for it? opening the left-hand menu and just typing Earth in the search field shows it up for me

hmm,

I would like to post a screenshot, but it does not seem to be possibel.
I got Google earth opened via the search function, but it is actually not listet in applications. Funny.
To explain the picture I get, the toolbar is there but google earth map, picture, view is only a fifty millimeter by 50 mm screen.
Reinstalled a dozen times or so but that didn't help.

Cheers,

I don't know what is wrong in your setup, it works quite fine here. Maybe giving a bit more information about your exact system, Desktop version, distribution, and screen might be helpful.

As for the image upload: you need to have a valid URL to insert in the IMG tags, so your picture needs to be uploaded on a publicly available site (sites with time delays for viewing or requiring a login for viewing won't work).

Hi,

thanks, so uploading a screenshot wont work then, I just don't see a chance to get the necessary IT skills together in my lifetime.....
What I am using is KDE user edition 5.14 on a 15 Macbook Pro.
To describe the picture, Google earth toolbar is showing up but the actual image is only an eights or so of the original size in the top left corner.
Cold it be that an open CPN installation is interfering here?
Just an idea...

Cheers,

Atmo
