Just wanted to add an opinion after using KDE4 (trunk vers 4.1.80 kde4.2 Beta1) for some time now...
I thought I would not like the lack of icons on the desktop and felt like I was being "forced" to use the "folder view" option. So I did use the folder view option and I have to say that I have come to see the sense in it. If for no other reason than for organizing my desktop icons. I like the fact that I can have one folder view for gaming icons and one folder view for internet icons, etc... I would like add support for an idea which I believe would be so useful with the desktop. I would like to have different icons on different desktops. I would love to have one desktop that only showed my business or office icons and another which only showed my personal or fun-time icons. Maybe I could even use another desktop strictly for development icons. To me this makes so much sense! Would that be hard to accomplish?

You can add filename filters to the folder view. This might achieve the effect you were looking for?

Don't quote me on this but I think that will be possible soonish, even if not by a GUI by the time 4.2 goes final. At least that's how I interpreted the "hidden" feature that will be a part of 4.2. That is, you're supposed to be able (even if unofficially in 4.2.0) to set plasmoids to have different settings for different desktops. It already works like that for activities. For example, I have one "main" activity and one that's for study-related matters. The folder-view of the former is very different to the one of the latter.

Yeah, activities is what you're looking for. Here's a short tutorial on how to use them.
As Kryten2X4B said, Plasma will allow you to set different activities for different virtual desktops in the future. Not sure when this'll be possible though. Meanwhile, you can create activities and switch between them with Ctrl+Shift+P and Ctrl+Shift+N. EDIT: If neverendingo is to be trusted, it's already in trunk.

Actually, it's possible with activities. You just have a different set of folder-views for each activity. Just hit the Icon at the top right of the screen and click zoom out then click it again and and add another activity. You can zoom in to each activity by clicking the "top-right icon" associated with it. edit: whoops I may have missed the train on that one.
