My current HP laptop is a 2012 model and is great, in that I can swap out the drive and memory quite easily.

I recently decided to get a new HP laptop and it appears deliberately designed so that I can't easily change any of the hardware.

Do any of you know of modern laptops that are customisable and suited for Linux/ KDE Neon?

Cheers,

M.

Have a look at Slimbook: they make a laptop that comes directly with KDE Neon

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Those Slimbooks look nice. Any other suggestions also appreciated.

I suppose Lenvo Thinkpads would also be a good choice, they make some models with Linux pre-installed. They are also pretty robust machines with nice keyboards.

I have Kubuntu runnong on a ten year old Thinkpad and KDE nEon running on a Lenovo Ideacentre.

Yeah, I've had my eye on those Thinkpads. Is the screen really bright? Some laptop screens hurt my eyes (e.g. Samsung).

I just got myself a Tuxedo Book Pulse with a Ryzen 5 processor, very neat and runs Linux out of the box. I had to install my preferred distribution on top, but that was not a problem at all :-)

I had my eye on those, but they're too expensive for me.

Thanks.

If you compare the prices between Slimbook and Tuxedo, they are pretty much the same for the same configuration, it's the hardware parts that make the price, e.g. CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD. If you want a Ryzen CPU, you will not find any cheaper.
Mind you, Tuxedo has a lot of different configurations and laptops, not just the Ryzen ones, and they definitely make Linux friendly laptops.

Thanks. I'm definitely a fan of those Ryzen CPUs.

Lenvo Thinkpads are a little outdated but still run most linux OS pretty well. From my experience I'd avoid Asus, I've had a ton of issues with installing and updating linux on many of my Asus machines.

I ended up getting a second hand HP 2018 model for a bit over $300 AUD. Works perfectly... :)
