I found switching sections in the side-bar and saving through the dialogue works.

Not only does it give us a classic desktop, but one can put plasmoids on the folderview desktop, including other folderviews! In fact, I'm starting to wonder why we have a choice between "folderview" and "desktop", when the folderview does everything a desktop does.

overhead, simplicity and features in the desktop containment that may not be immediately apparent but which aren't in the folderview containment such as widget auto-avoidance.

Brandybuck wrote:Just add an option "empty" or "no folder", and it would behave identically.

not really, no. but more importantly, you now have these odd "make this behave like it's something else" settings. pick a style (objects, icons, whatever) and the configure it.

Brandybuck wrote:I expect many distros to make this their default.

that would be a shame. that layer "under" the windows should be used for more than just an icon ghetto; most people use their computers rather differently compared to 1984. i understand some people don't agree, but frankly they are wrong.

really, the suggestion of making folderview the default is akin to suggesting that a minimalist window manager ought to be the default. "was good enough for my grandpa!"

Brandybuck wrote:What would really be cool would be collapsing folderviews. They could collapse into icons, then double click to open back up. Or is there already a way to do this?

collapsing folderviews are planned; maybe 4.3. you can put them into the panel in 4.2, but it's not really the same thing.

Brandybuck wrote:I need to go pull some pins out of this Aaron voodoo doll I made...

:-S

instead of pulling out those pins, why don't you go find someone else's software to use?

I just read on the Debian forums that there will be unsupported snapshot pacakges of the KDE 4.2 branch in the coming the next few days.

Can't wait!

You have to install google-gadget on your system.
Have a look at your softwaremanager.
After that you can add google-gadgets by the "add widget" dialog.
Works fine in Mandriva.

Does anyone know of any 4.2 generic and/or opensuse packages anywhere for this?

The Debian KDE 4 pre-release packages are here!

The packages are offered without support. I do hope they will offer packages beyond the 4.2 release as well.

Installed under archlinux and runs really nice. The only thing that disturbe me is the continues "blink" on the tray icons, but other thinks no problems.

It's not an icon ghetto. That's why I was so happy and made this post. I thought my choice was going to be either folderview, or widgets, but not both. But now we can have both. We can have icons and clocks and twitters together. People can choose to work they way they want to work.

why don't you go find someone else's software to use?

???

I installed 4.2 beta 2 on my opensuse 11.0 desktop

first impression isn't good: the software feels slower than kde 4.2 beta 1, the mouspointer in konqueror4 isn't working correctly (as in: the mouse pointer icon doesn't change correctly, it's a cursor on the scroll bars, a blinking cursor in editor fields when they don't have focus, a cursor or pointer on links in stead of a hand, etc. etc.
Shortcuts in konqueror 4 don't work: when i press F3 or Ctrl-F, Konqueror complains that the shortcut is ambigious and won't be executed. This happens at random, sometimes Konqueror does behave as expected..
I think i wait for a second build coming from opensuse to see if those quirks go away ;)

Beta 2 is pretty cool, but I'll stick to 3.5.10 on sidux and 4.1.3 on OpenSUSE and Mandriva for now.

Has anyone else noticed applications started with krunner doesn't start before activating krunner again?

You may wish to update to latest SVN trunk, since I cannot reproduce that here ( running 4.1.86 )

running 4.2 beta from Debian backports (well, Ana's packages in kde42.debian.net).

First of all: congrats to the Devs! You have done an amazing job and the solid base and goodness of KDE4 are really paying off. I already use 4.1 for daily use on my Arch install, but 4.2 beta is very, very good.

Now, a couple of questions:
1. I have some icons in a folder view with very long names, that only differ in e.g. the version number. I would like for the full name to show when I hover over an icon. Is that an option?
2. Trivial... is it possible to activate the desktop cube by dragging with the mouse? A la Compiz: ctrl-alt-drag??

Cheers!

Never mind.

I found the .deb you mentioned and converted it to .rpm with alien.

Woohoo! I have the quickaccess plasmoid back!

If anyone wants the opensuse 11/KDE4.2beta rpm it's Here

it's not a big deal really, it doesn't happen all that often either but sometimes it just leaves hanging until you hit again

I have another question too, not necessary beta specific but why does kmail want to access my wallet when turning the program off?
