KDE live cd

Sun Dec 28, 2008 11:58 am
Is there any kde live cd linux/bsd distro shipped with multimedia codecs?

I don't really care if it's KDE 3 or 4.

With a debian based distro, say kubuntu, you can install restricted extras package (kubuntu-restricted-extras) and burn it on a CD using AptonCD. That way, you can carry restricted codes around. Please note that is it needed that AptonCD is installed on both machines.
You can also choose to copy the archives in /var/cache/apt/archives

In theory you could spin your own livecd. I know there are tools out there for making your own, but I don't know how myself...

Most distributions wouldn't include the codecs on their Live CDs due to the legal ramifications distributing them on a CD would entail.

Just thought if there's any such *brave* ;) distro out there. Maybe I should just spin my own livecd instead. Thanks.

A little late in answering, but you might want to try the Vector Linux Soho live CD. I know that the installable CD comes fully loaded. Another possibility might be to use a debian based live CD and apt-get install from the net or from your hard disk. With at least some distros, it would be pretty easy to write a script that that would add the repositories to the live cd and download and install everything you need, all in one automated step.

Yeah, but spinning your own wouldn't be that hard, either.

Mandriva One (KDE version) can play several multi-media formats "out of the box". Might want to check that out, too.

Maybe you can try out linuxmint KDE version. It doesn't fit on a CD but on a DVD instead. It should have some restricted codecs on board. Still uses KDE 3 though.

Also, take a look at Ubuntu Media Center: http://en.ubuntumediacenter.org/
