I am not sure where to post this. I believe some of these issues might have been brought up in other posts but I could not find any (specific or similar/related) so I am posting here. I apologize if any of the content has been posted before and if it yet another complaint you've heard before.
This is my system: Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex x64_86 Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic Video: Nvidia 177.80 Video Card: Nvidia 7950 GT Xorg Server: 1.5.2 KDE ver.: 4.1.3 Is that enough info to be supplied? Issues: *mostly with the KDE menu. I'm trying to pinpoint exactly when they occur and what provokes it. It's usually when a few apps are open. The KDE menu goes berserk or haywire. Colours mishmash everywhere in the KDE menu and I can't read the program names or see the icons. I have to go by memory or place the cursor someplace to read what it is. The majority of the colour is black but you get a nice mixing of purple/orange etc., too. This is resulting in choosing the KDE menu launcher at the left (at the bottom where the panel is). The distorted menu is returned to 'normal' once a program window/session is moved or closed. For e.g., I have tried to take a snapshot with KSnapshot, the GUI snapshot program in KDE 4 but I cannot because the colours flicker but go to normal and the menu is 'restored.' But, it sometimes returns but I am unable to take a snapshot because the experience will repeat. Other instances of a problem include starting OpenOffice. The program is briefly shown to be a mishmash of colours including mostly black. Also, I've noticed distorted colours including orange. I can read 'OpenOffice' but it's definitely not normal and it is not smooth. The other issue that others might already know about is the 'blue squares' in the black panel (at the bottom) where icons should be. I cannot see the icon anymore as it's been replaced by 'transparent blue' of the desktop. I have 'effects' turned on. I can move a program (for e.g. OpenOffice) around with the cursor and upon placing it on top of the panel, the blue squares are now replaced by 'white' squares since an OpenOffice window session is primarily white (white screen with black text, right?). There is also a lot of flickering when the KDE menu is having a crisis of colours and this is especially noticeable when one first logs on/boots up. This also isn't specific or exclusive to Kubuntu either. I have also seen similar issues in Fedora 9 and 10, using the KDE edition. I believe it is KDE 4.1.2 or 4.1.3. Well, if there is any news or developments regarding these issues, please inform. I assume or perceive the issues as bugs and I was curious whether these issues are being worked out or whether it is a long-term ongoing project. Thanks for reading. Other than that, I am a KDE fan and I hope things can be fixed and resolved. |

Test the 4.1.85 version. Most of those are fixed. And try to use 180.18 for nvidia if you experience slow rendering using 3d stuff like plasma.

I've done both and I HATE HATE HATE HATE KDE 4.1.85. This is enough for me to seek out a Gnome-oriented desktop. Thanks for nothing to the KDE developers for a POS. My windows/screens no matter what I open is just stuck there. I can't move any windows. I had no idea there would be so many bugs. I'm glad I installed it so I would knew what I was in for so I can move to Gnome and I didn't like Gnome as much as KDE 3.5. But, KDE developers are trying to become the new Windoze and are ruining things. The KDE 4.2 Beta desktop is unusable. |

Does this HATE still have to do with your mentioned bugs?

There are other strange features that I don't like but I think if you can't move a screen or close it very easily... I think it's justified, no? People hate VISTA for a lot less... |
![]() Administrator ![]()

Sure it is justified. Did you try the same with a newly created user? And do the errors still occur? Sometimes old config files can create unwanted behaviour.

No. Why should I have to do that? I'm the only user.
|

Simply because that could be the reason. Old config files could create misbehaviour under a new version. KDE4 changed so much, and doing this could nail the problem down, if it is an error in the configs or more a bug in KWin/X

I don't think he wants a solution ![]() To the topic starter. Didn't it occur to you that the bugs you mentioned could be caused by something else beside KDE4? Shouldn't everyone have the same problems if it were problems caused by KDE4? To be honest, the things you mentioned sounds like driver problems. I have both Kubuntu and openSUSE installed and none of them give the problems you described! I suggest you to try the latest NVIDIA drivers (the beta one).

You mean Nvidia 180.18 beta? It's installed...[hr] I don't know where these so-called "solutions" are. There are a lot of 'strange behaviors.' I will try to summarize: 1) menu selection - e.g. #1 Amarok - cannot open... screen flashes/flickers (?) and it does not open. The menu opens up with 'blue desktop colours' where menu options should be 2) ALL programs except a few (like Kopete) open up to the left-hand corner of the screen. They cannot be moved, resized, closed etc. They can be closed with right-hand mouse button (in some cases) or by going to the program's 'File' on the toolbar. 3) Info: Nvida beta driver was installed first before upgrading to KDE 4.1.85. Kubuntu 8.10 x86_64 Nvidia 7950 GT 180.18 Beta KDE 4.1.85 4) Update: I cannot select any of the programs in the menu. I cannot go through the menu. The screen flickers wildly after iniitally clicking the menu with the mouse. This is all I can really provide. I cannot do much with the bug problems.

As already said, try it with a newly created testuser and verify if it still occurs. Or do a
in the konsole right after you try to start a programm. The last parts of it could contain some errors.

You can't judge software by it's beta. Wait until it's released, or even until your distro gets around to packaging the release. And because 4.2.0 has a .0 on the end, expect there to still be some remaining issues.
Oh, and turn off desktop effects. Many drivers require a massaged xorg.conf before they're happy with KDE4.
Don't look back! (Or you might see the giants whose shoulders we stand on)

When's the release then? It seems like an awful lot of bugs to be fixed over time.
I suppose many aren't claiming these bugs but there were issues with KDE 4.1.3 and for me, it's been several steps behind. I cannot create a new user, btw. I cannot enter the menu. Unless, I could run a program (KUser or???) via the terminal. I haven't tried that yet, though. |

KDE 4.2 will be released on January 27th, 2009
You can add a new user on the terminal with
adduser is also possible. Then log out and log in as this new user and see if the problems are still the same. Deleting of the testuser can be done with deluser. |

All of those are symptoms of having an incorrectly installed or corrupt system. I highly recommend you reinstall absolutely everything or try a different distribution. None of the problems are caused by KDE but rather are downstream from us and we cannot control those. |
