Why Dragon Player doesn't fit

Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:00 am
IMHO Dragon Player was a bad choice for default KDE player.

 Dragon Player, what the hell name is that ? Maybe a name after Konqui, but anyway we don't have Dragon Edit or Dragon Calc...

 External subtitles don't work... let's just say majoriry of KDE users need that feature to watch movies/series/documentaries...

I 'm sorry little Dragon, on my system you have been replaced by Kplayer :-)

Dragon Player is default because it uses Phonon, that's the only thing going for it really.

I too use KPlayer.

Smplayer is the best choice in my opinion.

It was mine aswell until i broke mplayer. Didn't have any time to fix it yet but smplayer definitely is a nice replacement for VLC/Kplayer, ... It comes with the power of mplayer and the easiness of any other player around.

Looking forward to the VDPAU features btw.

I just use mplayer by itself...

I remember hearing an mplayer backend being planned some time ago. Is it still coming?

I have the KDE4 version of kaffeine installed. It is far worse than Dragon Player, though, barely usable in fact. I actually like Dragon Player, it does most of what I need it to do.

Of course the KDE4 version of Kaffeine is hardy usable. Because it's not ready yet... ;-)

Of course, I should have said "barely usable yet." I figure the problems are going to be fixed eventually, just like they are being for all the programs being ported to KDE 4. My point was more that kaffeine does exist for KDE4, but it isn't ready to be used.

External subtitles do work. But only the ones in .srt format as of KDE 4.1. There's already a bug report about it and I believe that's being worked on.

(BTW, "Dragon Player" is the KDE 4 version of Codeine. AFAIK nothing much has changed since Codeine in the way it works. It's supposed to be a simple "just play your video" app.)

I tried using Dragon once, nothing happened, probably another codec problem.

Actually, I find that GUI media players are always troublesome with Linux, I've been using mplayer from the command line for a few years now. It always works flawlessly, all the codecs are included with the apt-get or YAST download, and I love the control that the the command line gives me. I have some nice commands preprogrammed into my keyboard shortcuts for fluxbox and KDE.

I actually like Dragon, it does the basic things. On the other hand, i understand people with higher claims.

Kplayer is THE KDE frontend for mplayer that, by itself, is already good enough.
