KDE4.1 is great on Kubuntu

Mon Jan 19, 2009 6:33 pm
I have seen a lot of whining lately, but I have tried all mayor distros this weekend and am staying with Kubuntu and KDE4.1. Everything works nicely, all my 3d applications (that fail on regular ubuntu, full of glitches when using the 3d effects) matlab, and other aplications that have failed even in other distributions that also use KDE 4.1, like suse, gentoo, sabayon and fedora.

Kubuntu + KDE 4.1 for the win: Good looking, compatible and stable. and all of this in 64 bit.

One downer though, is that piece of .... network manager. I removed it and now my networking is fine. There has to be something done about that buggy thing and static ips.

So to summarize, thank you KDE developers.

RE: KDE4.1 is great on Kubuntu

I was annoyed that, although I could get the filter toolbar for Konqueror on 4.1.3 on opensuse, I couldn't get it with Kubuntu. Same for KDE 4.2.

Finally, I got over that, because I'm using Dolphin for file management now. Dolphin has the filter toolbar.

Lately, I've always been annoyed at Kubuntu for something or other. All I want is to run Ubuntu with KDE on it, but somehow, it always seems like that's never enough for Kubuntu. Apparently, there are tweaks, which I never like. My feelings of annoyance were exacerbated by the fact that I was, until recently, determined to hold onto KDE 3 forever, if at all possible. They were the first distro to drop KDE3, and then there were some things posted on the Kubuntu site about KDE3 (it was on the wiki, it has been since removed ) that I considered misinformation. There was the shutting down of the Pearson KDE3 repositories, which were blamed on Kubuntu, perhaps unfairly. I was always mad at Kubuntu for some reason or other.

Well, I'm using KDE4 now. I'm even using Dolphin. And I'm running Kubuntu, I guess. I installed from a Kubuntu disk, and I'm using the Kubuntu repositories, mostly running KDE applications with KDE 4.2 Beta installed, but I'm usually running Fluxbox. So what do I call that? Kubuntu, Fluxbuntu, or just Ubuntu? I dunno, but I'm pretty happy with Kubuntu's role in my operating system. I stay away from the website.

Ubuntu is great, KDE is great. Therefore Kubuntu is great. For the moment, at least, it's just that simple.
