Perhaps you can wait few more days. The KDE forum team coming up with something that'd be a good place for nice ideas like these. (cited LinuxIsInnovation)

Sure, I can do that. It will probably take a few days to get the rewrite done anyways.

What I would do is to write an introductory email, where you tell a bit of the background and rationale. You can tell what suggestions you are about to post. No need for specifics in this initial mail, but you could refer to this thread here.

After you have posted that initial message, you could then post individual messages about each separate suggestion. That is, instead of posting one monolithic email, split the suggestion up. As to screenshots.... Well, you already have screenshots in this thread, just post links to them :).

Be specific in your suggestions and offer rationale why your suggestion is a good idea and tell what problem it solves/how it makes life better. Don't take it personally if someone tells you "no, that's not a good idea". I have been there. I thought I had the best idea ever, but the devels shot it down. Such is life.

But, if the Forum-admins are coming up with a new and better way, it might make sense to wait for that. But mailinglist is the default way, and there's no harm in posting there.

Good luck, your ideas deserve a good look-over :)!

Pretty. :-)
However, the URL is wrong (it links to the previous image - tree_navigation.png).

Looking forward to see how the Dolphin devs respond. The times I've talked with Peter Penz he's been very kind and open to suggestions.

Once I sent a bunch of suggestions regarding toolbars in KDE to kde-usability. I decided to put everything in a PDF file, which seemed to work fine except that my mail had to await moderator approval.
(If you're interested, it can be read here).

I'm doing the rewrite now. Hopefully it will be done in few days.

The rewrite is done! The first post in this topic has been entirely re-done. Please take a look at it to see if there are any mistakes, anything that is unclear, or any other suggestions or improvements you might have. Additional ideas for Dolphin are still welcome as well. I still need to proofread for typos and other small mistakes, but this is the post's final form.

[SOLVED] Dolphin Ideas (with mockups)

Sun Mar 08, 2009 11:22 am
Well if Dolphin will really have all this features it would be on of best file managers out there.
I also have an idea. I would like to see KIO slave that would make Dolphin/Konqueror look more like "Windows/Explorer".
I mean that in a way that instead of cryptic /etc, /bin /... you would get something like applications (OK this is already "taken" and it shows the applications inside menu...) and etcetera... Something similar to what GoboLinux is doing.
I remember this being a a "heated" debate on Ubuntu Brainstorm. And I think it would be nice.

Thanks!

As for your suggestion, I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean.

Yeah I feared that would happen. Even I don't really know what I'm talking about.
I'll try again.
New users might be a bit lost in what /etc is or where are programs that she or he installed. So I would like to see that dolphin would have a
new user option which would show a bit more user friendly way of file management.
Link to GoboLinux to sketch what I wish: http://gobolinux.org/?page=at_a_glance

I really don't think that is possible unless you somehow know beforehand which binaries and settings go with which program. Gobolinux has programs installed in different directories than normal and then links them to the normal place. But I do not think KDE has any way to tell on its own which files go together and which don't. The distribution would probably have to provide that information. I am also not sure it is KDEs job to train people to use the Linux filesystem structure. Further, if a user is so new to linux that they do not know what /etc is, then they should probably not be going in there in the first place. The same thing goes for anything but their own home directory. That being said, I'll see what I can do about coming up with an idea that is feasible.

One thing that could be done is putting a link to applications:/ in root a la Mac OS X. This would let users ignore the scary/dangerous parts of the root structure and stick with the familiar.

"Familiar" parts could be put at the beginning of the directory to make "ignoring" easier. Also what would be needed is a "Devices" page that can be accessed similarly, as well as remote:/ (Network) trash:/, settings:/ etc...

Note no real links would be needed, Dolphin could add these dynamically. Also, a "root made easy" could be made, as a type of "super-home" directory, providing a simplified access to these functions.

Essentially a souped up "places:/"

Just throwing this out there to work with.

It looks like whatever the forum admins had planned hasn't happend. Does anybody know what the correct mailing list is that I should submit this to?

It is still happening, we are just waiting for our Dot story to be posted before opening the forum up
Should happen within the next couple of days.

If you are to submit this as either a brainstorm idea, or to the Dolphin developers, I would recommend breaking it down into several more pieces. Longer emails tend to get ignored.

Just a small idea which I think wasn't proposed yet. There should be an option to hide backup files backup~.
And if you would want to see them you would press altgr+1 which produces ~. I think that would be nice and it would un-clutter folders.
