i'm here to propose an import/export desktop+plasma+appearance themeing system
something that saves in a single file, all appearance settings like: color icons windows style plasma positions/size etc to make possible a complete theme "trade" for people using for example kde-look etc... a possibility to make use the HUGE POWER of kde customization, also to newbies to help those newbies config their setting in a more familiar way (for example downloading a MS theme, a mac one etc) with just a few clicks an all-in-one themeing tool with infos on downloading single colour theme, plasma etc... or everything already into the file sorry if something similar already exist (never seen in kde vanilla installation) but i always customized my system by hand (cause i use kde since kde2 ![]() |

This is interesting. I'm not quite sure how the new themes work, but it does seem silly to me that "appearance" and "Desktop Settings," and "Display" are all different applications, thus necessitating different hidden "dot files (.plasmrc for example)"
it would be nice to have everything in one hidden file with different headings and sections to it. Kind of like xorg.conf... Then a user could just go to the relevant section and change his settings by hand, or an app could edit just that section of a appearance.conf file and then save the whole thing. Makes so much sense to me.

yes something like this
small app with a theme selection, the get new theme from kde-look(like every theming app in kde4) the "save interface button" the "restore interface button" the save interface, just takes every configuration file from each position, and puts them into one tar file the restore does the opposite, puts config file in every config and the get new downloads them from kde-look it can be configured to automatically download everything is needed (for example i download the caffeine theme, it includes the calculator plasma, it automatically downloads it from the integrated plasma downloader) or can be an all integrated file (with plasmas, icons etc inside it), wich automatically installs everything in the right position for example kde3 had a full theming section in his appeareance with kde4, plasmas etc something similar would be so much useful, cause for a newbie it could be hard to config every option |

About Plasma, configuration files are plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc and you can manually backup these files or erase it to begin with a fresh desktop.
I'm using a dirty script to backup and restore several Plasma configurations without problems but, obviously, a better tool are always welcome ![]()

Just for future reference, the 4.3 will have plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc because of the name change of the executable (this is the current state of the SVN trunk as well)
