True, but then again: it is a fact. Okay, usually not in Linux-land since there are relatively few programs to pirate in the first place (actually, that's one aspect of FOSS in general that I think is underrated: that it's possible to own a computer that can manage a lot "on a budget" without the user having to resort to piracy). Still, I have to wonder...how much higher would the FOSS adaptation rate be if it was physically impossible to pirate something? I suspect it would have been quite a bit higher. I can only speak for myself, but a lot of windows-using friends and co-workers have been astounded when I've shown how much good-quality software can be had for free, and legally! In a way it seems like people have been "brainwashed" to think that software need to come with a hefty pricetag to be of any use (maybe with the exception of firefox).

Nevertheless, forums are always under a high pressure of NOT being illegal or giving such content, so it's simply not allowed here.
It's probably a good discussion point, sure, but please not here. WE (as in WE HERE) are only KDE, nothing more and nothing less, updating, upgrading, installing etc, is mostly up to distributors, questions about compiling can go into the appropriate sections. |

Point taken. Out of curiosity though...can a discussion board really be held legally responsible for what its users are doing?? Even if they "confess" in a post? Asked by the authorities to divulge the user's identity, sure (if the crime is severe enough). But further than that?

Unfortunately, yes. |

I actually think that answer is different depending on which country the server is based in. And I do see how the forums can be responsible when they fail to censor a post revealing how to accomplish an illegal activity. I didn't actually do that, but it was borderline. My apologies. |

If you are concerned about the looks about KDE, you have to realise that we offer a lot more theming capabilities than windows (yes, windows does have third party hacks). the KDE 4.x series is still growing and it'll take some time until we get some truly astonishing themes. Until then, make do with the ones we have.
When I came I was also a bit confused on how to find what was the best tool for the job. On Windows through experienced I had a list of really useful applications that were vital for what I used the computer for, whereas in Linux it was a whole new world. One useful way I find good applications is by asking in the IRC channels "Can somebody recommend me a good (KDE/Gnome/anything/lightweight) application that can do x, y, or z?" I normally get very good tips, and they're all usually in my distribution's package manager (portage for me).

I would like to mis/ab/use this thread to ask this quite important question:
How hard is it to do your own windows decoration? Is there any application that can make window decoration easier? I with OP that most of window decorations aren't really that nice or realistic and are more or less cartoonish. Even my current Bespin theme is plastic and to some extent cartoonish. I know I could tweaked it some more as Bespin is one of most tweakable themes, but still I feel that KDE4 needs more themes. If I have right data there are really not that much themes for KDE4. There are all of the default: KDE2, Keramik, Modern systems, Oxygen, Ozone, Plastic, Laptop, Quartz, Redmond and Web. In addition to this there are: Crystal, Bespin and SKulpture. And that's that I guess. So my opinion is that not only that KDE4 is in dire need of more themes, but the sole creation of them should be as easy as creating a plasma theme.
