Hi,
I just like to tell you that I really like the look and feel of KDE 3, I also like the look of Windows 98. This weekend, I tried KDE 4.2. My first impression was, that its look and feel compares to WIndows Vista - and I really hate both. It seems that people tried to give KDE a more modern look by using less contrast in colours and a lotof bluring wherever possible. Indeed, it looks very modern, but this look is not comfortable. Of course, KDE 4.2 has a lot of nice features that I'm interested in. I'm happy that I tested KDE 4.2 only in a virtual machine, keeping my desktop at the old 3.5 version. When my linux distribution fores me to upgrade in future, I hope that I will find a "classical" theme that looks like KDE 3. KDE 4.2 looks modern but not useful. I think, people wasted a lot of time developing this desktop theme and icon set . |

you can still use a style/theme that mimics older KDE or Windows version. As for me, I find the modern look much more pleasing to the eyes, especially when staring at the screen for hours

yes, but it's a rare preference .... I like the moderns themes because shows the evolution desktops. btw, There are some old styles by default in kDE4. And plasma.. I guess that you want a opaque theme, without transparencys and gradients... :-S :undecided: |

I don't get this "people wasted a lot of time". There are people who waste their time on IRC, or watching clips on youtube. Why should you or I care? Instead, shouldn't we be grateful that there are people who spend their free time on improving KDE?
![]() If you want it to look old fashioned, just use another style/icon set/Plasma theme etc.

Try Aya or if your a minimalist like me try my theme Bare Naked (self-PR tm) My theme: ![]() Aya: ![]() forgot to add: The coolest thing with Aya is that it takes the system colour that you use. So you can really make it look (colour-wise) whatever you wish. In this screenshot I tried to make it look like Gnome (just for fun). Oh and BTW: Which distro do you use. I know that PCLinuxOS 2009 will still use KDE3.5.9, and some other distros will probably still keep KDE3 in repos. So your probably safe, even though I think that only newest and greatest is good for me ![]() ![]()

@PoL666
It was intended for the original poster - the one with a "rare preference" as you said. I'm a bit tired of people saying that something is bad, or even in this case 'a waste of time' just because they don't like it. Especially, when there are alternatives to the object of disliking, which are, in this case a couple of clicks away. |

Sorry guys I disagree! I have just come from doing a Vista upgrade to Kubuntu for a work friend & he is so pleased with the look & performance of kde 4.x he has been using Vista for 12 months & does not see any resemblance between kde & Windows.
For myself I have been using KDE since 1. something & always look forward to new innovation, criticizing the devs sweat & blood only will make them despondent & achieves nothing. 2c Cary

Please let me correct myself. The new design is not a waste of time, because there are surely lots of people who like it. And its good that the other users can select the old style plastic design, which is my preference.
I wish that KDE will support old style in future as it does today. Some people prefer a more cleaner style, some might also prefer a technically simple style because their computer is slow. It's good that styles and effects are configurable, and this feature should not get removed. |

Use the Plastique style, Plastik windows theme, and Aya plasma theme, and voila! KDE3 look!

lol... I've got to admit that the first time I fired up 4.2 it looked pretty horrific to me as well, but a several hours of tweaking finally brought it to an acceptable level.

Just let a system upgrade install a new version of KDE, almost holding my breath. The version that came with FC9 was awful, couldn't get rid of balloons or wallpaper, keystrokes stopped working and I couldn't believe that KDE, which had been my choice for years, had fallen apart. All I can say about the new version is thanks, it seems to be working again. Not as well as it used to, but at least working. I read that KDE had taken a "break everything" approach with version 4, and my personal experience was consistent with that. Keep up the good work, I'll persist.

Yes, they wasted their time because you find the artwork ugly. If you find the artwork attractive, then they wouldn't have wasted their time. Excuse me, but I'm quite busy rolling my eyes.
