Some observations from a newbie

Tue Feb 17, 2009 9:16 am
Hello there,

I just switched from Windows XP to ubuntu 8.10 ... running with KDE 4.2 right now.
Just some thoughts, comments observations:

I have seen KDE a bit in the past; and I really like the new "4" look and feel. Its modern, and it didnt take me long to love features like the "one click" approach with files in my desktop and so on.
I also like the look and feel of panels and widgets; after testing around a few days I am quite convinced that KDE is the right thing for me.

Well, some things are not so great; but maybe there are fixes available ... like config settings I couldnt find so far:

  • the "leave" window (put another thread about this in the Look and feel forum) ... I really dislike the idea of having a "button on top of a button" to select "suspend" instead of "turn off".
  • there is no good indication that the system is in the process of shutting down when you clicked "turn off" (or tried to suspend but failed ;-)
  • my bluetooth headset wont work ... but that is more of a bluetooth stack / ubuntu problem; so I dont blaim it on KDE. But I have to say that the gnome bluetooth applet is a bit better - it wont connect providing a real sound device, but at least I got some sounds to my headset. The KDE thingy doesnt even allow me to search for audio devices. Uncool.
  • Same for networking. I abandoned the kdenetwormanager after an hour or more of hard struggle with my WLAN at home. The gnome applet worked instantely.
  • I really liked konquerer ... until I figured that I am NOT able have a "nickname" for my bookmarks. Interesting that such a simple feature makes a clear "no go".
  • Is there a way to add a confirmation dialog when panels are deleted? Lost mine yesterday ... and it took me quite some time to bring back all the stuff.

Long story short: KDE 4.2 is really some kewl thing. If your machine is powerful enough; i dont see much reason to go anything else. But there are still a lot of little things that could be better. The shiny UI attracts people - but the little things make 'em stay - or leave.

thanks for listening :-)

Bluetooth -> I think if you build KBluetooth from trunk it will function. not sure however.
KNetworkManager -> That has been broken for a long time. A Plasmoid is in development for KDE 4.
Leave + Shutdown -> see other thread
Confirmation dialog for panel removal -> I was sure there was a confirmation dialog...
Bookmarks -> Please define "Nickname". What application(s) have this feature.

The Network Manager plasmoid, although not officially released yet, now works well (I use it daily on my EeePC).

Thanks for the fast response.

Yep, there is a confirm dialog. So that is more of a user error ;-)

Opera calls it "nickname", firefox calls it "keyword". Probably the thing that konquerer calls a web shortcut. Just that a konquerer web short cut is not a property of a bookmark but something different.

At this time Konqueror does not support a feature like this unfortunately. You may wish to file a feature request if one has not already been filed. Konqueror web shortcuts are completely different, Opera calls them "Search Engines", and Firefox does not support them.
