You can update to KDE 4.2 using the KDE:KDE4:Factory repository. Simply add that repository using the Software Repositories, then open Software Management.

Set the filter to "Repositories" then select the KDE:KDE4:Factory repository. It should display a list of all packages in that repository. Finally open the Package menu, expand "All in this list" and select "Update if newer version is available". Then accept.

If you deviate outside what repoisitories provide your system to install, then it is much harder to add or remove individual components at a later date. In addition, the latest stable KDE 4.2 will be provided in source code form, so you will have to install many development packages. However it can be done, although not recommended

Packages are more integrated with the system infrastructure.
