KDE notifications

Thu Feb 26, 2009 5:04 pm
Hi. I would like sometimes a discreet method for notification, as well as a less annoying from the notification windows when working.

So i thought of this idea: to have the keyboard's scroll-lock light blinking for some seconds. That's why i wished this in kde wishlist. I would like you people if you like this idea to vote for it.

Another think is that i would like smaller notification windows (i liked kde3.5 ones). Would it be nice if we could set their size?

If anyone thinks of a better discreet notification method please reply.

Thanks everyone for voting.

For me this is almost useless: I don't look at the keyboard when writing... But I must admit it is an interesting idea; many people will find it useful.

I actually don't have a scroll lock light at all on my laptops (HP nx6320 and nx7400) :)

Oh dear, a patch was even committed for this?

As the one poster said, many users do not look at the keyboard when they type, and even users who do look at the keyboard occasionally are not always looking at the keyboard, they are looking at the screen. On many keyboards (especially laptops) there is no scroll lock light. So you have a large group of users who will never notice the scroll lock notification.

Also, there is no guarantee that if the user notices the scroll lock blinking that they will figure out that a blinking scroll lock light has any association with a notification. Those users who do see a blinking scroll lock light will be more likely to assume something is wrong with their keyboard (especially if they are using a wireless one which requires syncing to a base station) than an association to a system event. They keyboard is simply an input device. Users do not have a conceptual model which supports that the keyboard could be used as a method for feedback from the computer system. (caps lock/scroll lock are seen as a function of the keyboard, not the system)

This option will only cause more confusion than help.

Ok, i made this script which uses the "
"xset led 3" command to blink the scroll lock LED. (In my keyboard scroll lock is led 3, anyone can modify the script to work for his machine).
Although, knotify cannot execute a command (maybe a kde 4.2 bug, at least in my pc).
I really find is useful, especially at night, when i have my speakers off.
Thank everybody for their opinions.

PS While searching, i found that knotify author Olivier Goffart had though of the idea himself before 3 years, but just proposed it.
