The grossly oversimplified version is that Qt essentially handles the graphical stuff for KDE, as well as a lot of other underlying tasks. It is the framework in which KDE is built. It is absolutely essential to running anything KDE-based. KDE 4.2 requires QT 4.4. It works with QT 4.5, mostly. A few things have problems, and Qt 4.5 is not officially supported for KDE 4.2 (it will be for KDE 4.3). Qt 4.5 is also not completely stable, it is in release candidate mode right now. The final version will be released next month some time (I don't know when, specifically). Some future bugfix release of KDE 4.2 (that is, KDE 4.2.x), may officially support Qt 4.5, but even if it does it will probably not be until after the stable version comes out. Personally the only serious problem I have is with Lancelot, but I think Lancelot has already been fixed in trunk.

If you use KDE 4.2 use Qt 4.4 and don't upgrade if you can.
If you use KDE trunk/4.3 use Qt 4.5. |
