Trip down the memory lane: KDE2.2.2

Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:27 am
This April, the first and it's April fools pranks were very cool at least for me.
First Arch announced dropping i686 support which made me realize that I actually have
a 64bit processor.
Then two days late I found out that KDE have issued a LiveCD that brings back all
of desktop functionality that was supposedly lost in KDE4.
And the LiveCD actually is a OpenSuSE 11.1 with KDE2.2.2
You can read about it here:
http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3926

Anyway I tired KDE2.2.2 as I never had the opportunity to use it when it was new;
came to KDE when it was in KDE4.5.9 and changed to KDE4 when I first got the chance.

So this is a look at KDE2 from a user used to KDE4. And I mus say that some things were really cool, and were lost in process.
Like "folding" the kicker to the corner, so much cooler than hiding or covering it.
And the hover effect over quick launch icons while kicker is set to small (very OS X)
First time settings where you can set your KDE to behave as KDE, Unix, Redomond or MAC. that's one of things that I miss the most in KDE4.
Sorry no screenshots, but I think that the best thing to do is to sacrifice one CD or run it in virtualbox and experience it yourself.

You mean the slider button like in 3.5?

Edit: Actually, most of the things you described are still in KDE 3.5 (except the zooming icons which were removed in 3.5 for some reason but were there in 3.4). I'm actually surprised how similar 2.2.2 was compared to KDE 3.4...

I remember using KDE 3.3 and will compare to how KDE 4.3 will function.
I came at the end of the KDE 2 era, but for fun I did try this out in Vbox.
Its not that bad considering how old it is, but its easy to see why KDE3 came about in such a short time.

Oh yeah now I vaguely remember! I don't know if I use it or even had it (don't know why). But this became one of my favourite and one of most wished features for KDE4.3+.
That's just so much better than just normal hiding.
Anyway I even proposed it on Brainstorm section :D
