So before Firefox 3.5 is released today I thought I'd give good ole Konq a try again (Version 4.2.91 (KDE 4.2.91 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090609)) on Gentoo). To my surprise it still keeps getting better and better. Flash seems to be working in webkit. Webkit seems to be scoring 100 on acid3 with a few artifacts. No critical rendering errors which force me to switch to something else so far. I just imported all of my firefox bookmarks (after exporting them from its stupid sqlite file) and it worked PERFECTLY!
Its really amazing people don't see more potential in this browser. Its basically a cleaner looking better integrated faster QT version of firefox. Really the only thing firefox has going for it is the fact that it actually tends to render things properly and has a few popular plugins. Konqueror really is conceptually lightyears ahead of anything else out there as far as I'm concerned. Nothing else offers these kinds of features - QT4, split view, two rendering engines, full-fledged file browser, kparts, kio (a ridiculously ahead of its time feature), embedable konsole, built around KDE. If webkit/khtml rendered with the level of reliability that Firefox did, I'd be sold in an instant. It is indeed improving though. Thanks a million to those who are still working on this - its probably one of the most overlooked highest potential free software desktop applications around IMHO. I don't generally run KDE anymore and instead use a more minimalistic XMonad & XMobar; but I still find KDE's applications to be my favorite. I REALLY want to make this my everyday browser, but bugs and display quirks keep sending me back to Firefox. Hopefully this times a charm.

Agreed - I downloaded Firefox 3.5 yesterday and I was reminded of KDE2 more than KDE4 - but, for many of those on another operating system, KDE2 would be an advance.
Anyway, keep up the good work. It is much appreciated by a discerning group of users. |
