i am currently running RHEL 4.5 and the GNOME or KDE is taking a quite a sum of my CPU power. i am more comfortable running in terminal mode as i experience it in RH 9.0 when i did not install the X Windows or GNOME or KDE.

How can i disable or remove the GNOME or KDE or XWindows and allow it to boot into terminal? if not possible, what can i look out for when installing RHEL 4.5 that i must untick.

You should probable change /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel. Mine looks like this:
Code: Select all
#
# /etc/inittab
#

#  Runlevels:
#    0    Halt
#    1(S)   Single-user
#    2    Not used
#    3    Multi-user
#    4    Not used
#    5    X11
#    6    Reboot

## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
# Boot to console
#id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11
id:5:initdefault:

In my case I should comment the last line and uncomment id:3:initdefault:. Beware that your runlevels might be different.
