Well, at least this point goes to exiftool, it *is* available also for Windows and MacOS. |

Very bad design decision saddling us with a 44 tonne resource hogging juggernaut just to display metadata previews.
I personally hate indexers and usually find them disk thrashing monsters that should be strangled at birth ![]() |

Nepomuk != Strigi.
Strigi is the indexer. Nepomuk can work well even if you disable indexing.

Yes, but without indexer = strigi no metadata AFAIK... |

Bumping this thread with good news. There's ongoing work and discussion to show file meta data even when not using Nepomuk. The changes will hopefully land in the next SC release (4.5).

I'm using 4.5.1 - and when I turn off Nepomuk I don't get any information about the picture dimensions anymore for a lot of pictures.
Dilemma for me: I need to see the picture dimensions but don't want to use Nepomuk, because I don't and won't use the desktop search or the tags and comments. And since 4.5 it freezes Konqueror for up to several minutes when I download something, even when saving rather small pictures. Very annoying. |

The information will only be generated if Nepomuk is enabled ( in my experience ). Strigi can be disabled however.
