Hello,
I am hoping someone can help answer my question. What happened to the meta data in the Dolphin information panel? Here is what happened... - Linux Mint 7 install with Gnome being the base GUI. - I then installed kubuntu-desktop for KDE 4.2.2 - I then installed KDE 4.3 beta from the kubuntu experimental repo. - Now, I have KDE 4.3 RC2 (4.2.96) from the Kubuntu backports repo. In 4.2.2, I had information showing in the Dolphin panel such as (file type, info, image size, jpeg, etc...) Now, since 4.3 beta there is no such information. In fact, nothing shows. What happened? Am I missing something? This is what I am talking about: http://ppenz.blogspot.com/2009/04/information-panel.html I realize 4.3 has/will have added features. But I currently have nothing. Not even the right click menu that is shown. Help please, Thank you! |

Ok, this is good to know that it has changed in 4.3 because I had no idea. As for nepomuk / strigi...Is that the System Settings >> Advanced >> Desktop Search >> ??? If so, both check boxes are blank. I to enable "Nepomuk Semantic Desktop" and the only thing that changed in Dolphin was that a new option for "Tag" and "Star" a file for rating. No meta data was shown. I then enabled the "Strigi Desktop File Indexer" checkbox but it gave me an error. Sorry, I can't remember what the error was. I believe it was "Unable to connect...?" Now, with both boxes unchecked... The error says "The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstrigiservice was not provided by any .service files" So something is SNAFU with this on my system. Its almost as if it is trying to use some old settings from my old .kde folder that I have since deleted to start a new one when I switched to 4.3. Also, I don't understand why this "server" system is needed just to show meta data. It worked fine in 4.2. I prefer not having to run a "server" or file indexing system for file meta infos. Please clarify...which one is absolutely needed for this new 4.3 method. The "Nepomuk Semantic Desktop" alone, or with "Strigi Desktop File Indexer" enabled? And ATM, in my System Monitor there is a "nepomukserver" running with 0% CPU, 14.9 M, and 9.3 M of shared mem. Something is not working properly. |

I run Trunk and get minimal meta data ( Size, Modified Date, etc ) from my files without Nepomuk / Strigi running.
Please try under a new user and verify that your systems packages are the correct versions and architectures ( if 64 bit ).

Hello all
This is my first post here and I am very impressed by the forum; the work going on kde4 is fabulous and I am really eager to use it on all my computers; kde4 is running on my thinkpad but my workstation is still kde3 because ... ... there is a big big show stopper for me: I work with hundreds of images of artworks each of them carrying a lot of information that were stored in the _meta info_ tab in file properties in kde3. These informations were available to many apps (gimp...). Now neither konqueror nor dolphin show these informations: there is nothing in the _Add Comment_ of the information panel of dolphin; in konqueror, there is no _meta info_ tab in the properties window. Is there somehow a way to retrieve these informations in dolphin/konqueror since they are still in the files: when I open an image with gimp (in kde4), the _comment_ window shows all the information recorded in the file. I really do not relish the idea of copying back all these hundreds of records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks jyp kde 4.2.4 dolphin 1.2.1 sidux 2009-02 (fully upgraded) |

It seems likely that KDE was compiled without certain development libraries available. Does your distribution provide packages which are precompiled or are they compiled on installation?
Alternately, can you reproduce under a new user?

I second bcooksley's opinion: on KDE 4.3 RC2 here in Dolphin I see all EXIF tags from my photos, for example.

Thank you for the answers.
@bcooksley sidux is debian (sid) so everything that is installed on my system is from deb packages; kde4 is what is packaged by debian so it should not have been tempered with.I will check under a new user. @einar In Dolphin, I see a limited set of informations: Type, Size, Modified, Height, Width. No EXIF tags. When I click on the image, Gwenview is opened and there, with _Meta information > More..._ I can access to _Property > General_ (which are the same as in Dolphin) and _Property > Exif_ which gives me more info such as resolution. But the main problem is not that. All my images carry personal comments (like: artwork: the rising of sun, 2008, etc...); these comments were put in the _property > meta info_ tab in kde3 and I have hundreds of them. These comments don't show up neither in Dolphin nor Gwenview; but they show up in the comment tab in gimp. I conclude that my personal comments are still attached to the image file. How can I retrieve them in Dolphin (and Gwenview)? thanks jyp kde 4.2.4 dolphin 1.2.1 sidux 2009-02 (fully upgraded) |

update to my last post.
@bcooksley I created a new user; the situation with Dolphin is even worse; there is the usual minimal info on the image but this time, no _Add Comment_ and no _Change Tags_ links. jyp kde 4.2.4 dolphin 1.2.1 sidux 2009-02 (fully upgraded) |

Some more info.
In kde3, the _meta info_ tab in Properties was available provided that the packages _kdegraphics-kfile-plugins_ (for graphic files) and the package _kdeaddons-kfile-plugins_ (for text files) were installed. Unfortunately, it seems that these packages do not exist anymore in kde4; the closest I can get is a package named _kdegraphics-strigi-plugins_. I installed it but it did not cure the problem. Any suggestions or clues? Thanks jyp |

The loss of "Add comment" and "Add tags" links is because Nepomuk is not running under the new user.
I do not know why they are not showing. Try looking for "kfile" related packages for KDE 4.

I wonder if this functionality is provided by kipi-plugins? Try installing them.

I also tried creating a new user, but it did not show the meta data. When I first logged in to the new user, it popped up a warning to install "soprano-backend-sesame." I installed that but it didn't help.
I installed "kipi-plugins" and some other dependencies but that did not help either. I have noticed that when I enable the "semantic" thing in desktop search. It enables the file rating and tag information in the information box in dolphin. When I click on "Tag" there is nothing in there other than "Add" To those who do have this meta information working...does your dolphin look like this...meta, and the right click menu??? ![]() I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. |
