support for PPTP VPN in KDE

Fri Aug 07, 2009 9:32 am
Hey all

I'd like to use KDE 4 on a daily basis, but the main thing that's keeping me back is the lack of support for PPTP VPNs. The main providers of VPN services where I live provide VPN only through those means... Is there any plans to add support for PPTP?

I don't know if the new networkmanager plasmoid supports PPTP VPN's (haven't yet updated my laptop to 4.3), but you may want to try that.

If it doesn't, you can still use the "gnome" network manager in kde, and it works too -- most of the people I know with latops use the gnome network manager on kde.

There's also kvpnc, which does a good job at connecting to, among others, PPTP VPNs

I tried to use nm-applet, but i get this error:

** (nm-applet:15165): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

I started using KVpnc now which works almost quite well, at least it reconnect on disconnection unlike network manager :-)

You probably have the networkmanager for kde 4 installed; part of it is a small daemon to keep networkmanager's settings that is active even if the plasmoid has been removed.

I think you can disable it in system settings > advanced > service manager. (I can't tell you exactly because I only have one computer using 4.3, and it's my desktop, but some months ago when I tried the networkmanager plasmoid I remember having to disable something to get back to nm-applet).

Some progress! Although not sure whether this will land in 4.3.x or 4.4 :) See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174439

There is KVpnc which is in playground/network. It provides support for Cisco VPN, IPSec VPN, PPTP VPN, OpenVPN, Vtun VPN and SSH VPN. :)

You can get the latest from svn:
Code: Select all
svn co svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/playground/network/kvpnc kvpnc-kde4
 cd kvpnc-kde4
 cmake .
 make
 su
 make install
 exit

You can get it alternativly from KVpnc homepage (http://www.kvpnc.net). Binaries for various distributions also there.
