kde4.1.2 - the problem is not kde4 but the apps and plasma. Kde4 as a wm seems fine and has been very stable for me. I do have kde3 installed and still run some of the apps.

I use kde 3.5.10.
kde 4.1.2 is very wonderfull, but the problems with nvidia are very frustrating.... and the fullscreen videos works very bad in kdemod 4 ( Archlinux kde )... If i want to use kde4, i must disable all effects...... |

I'm using KDE 3.5.9 (or ist it 10 in sidux? I'm too lazy to look it up), and I'm very happy that I'm not forced to use KDE 4.1.2, because Konqueror still sucks heavily in KDE 4.1, and because I can't define my own shortcuts (that one is especially annoying).
To use KDE 4.1.2, I also would have to use a different distro, which is not really an option for me (I really hate distro hopping, I can't actually do my work because I'm busy with installing, moving settings and so on), especially as sidux works so well for me, plus it has this wonderful rolling release system.

@blueget: sorry, but you can define shortcuts. both the web ones ( i have one for youtube ) and actual shortcut keys can be changed.

I'm still using KDE 3.5. The main reason why I don't want to switch yet is because I don't feel like moving all my KDE-PIM stuff over.
I don't really want to mix versions either, since everything is so well integrated with each other (one of the best aspects of KDE, I think), and if I were to do that, this seamlessness will be lost. And, I don't really want two KWallets with different sets of passwords. And I don't want stuff anything breaking when I really need everything working. I'm pretty sure I'll switch once 4.2 is out, though.

I use both KDE3 and 4. I have two accounts on my main PC. One for personal use which runs KDE4 and one for work/business use that runs KDE3. I would move the work account to KDE4 bar for a few missing features that would affect my work flow.

I am using KDE 4.1.2
Works great but is less configurable. In KDE 3.5 Every single thing we can see is configurable, even the desktop icons for media etc.
Some people like small separate things/apps for doing seperate work while some Love to use one big thing/app...

KDE 3.5 simply because I don't care for teh widgets. Rubbish reason, I know.

I am still on 3.5, mostly because of missing apps in KDE4 and because of my 3D_desktop_effects&these_plazmo-something_phobia... ;^)

Using KDE4 exclusive since march 2008, first used KDE4 svn repo by markc (Archlinux), then tried the vanilla, then KDEMOD, KDEMOD unstable, now i'm using svn again, KDE4 sometimes sucks, sometimes rocks. Today it rocks.

I started to use KDE in about August this year because I think that GNOME is too feature-poor. I was using Ubuntu Hardy at that time. I installed the kubuntu-kde4-desktop package and had a try. It is fantastic! It's more beautiful and feature-rich. However, in September, I ran into some problems with KDE 4.1 and downgraded to KDE 4.0. As KDE3 is becoming obsolete, I never use KDE3 anymore. There was some hardware in Ubuntu 8.04 so when Ubuntu 8.10 came to beta, I upgraded the system immediately to Ubuntu 8.10. At that time, I had both ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-kde4-desktop packages installed. The upgrade process translated kubuntu-kde4-desktop to kubuntu-desktop smoothly. However, because KDE 4.1 was problematic at that time, I switched back to GNOME temporarily. After I upgraded and purged some packages, KDE 4.1 suddenly became smooth again. I didn't know if it is the usplash package caused this problem, but I dare not try installing usplash again because usplash itself is problematic. I have nearly abandoned GNOME now except for some packages include firefox and thunderbird (konqueror and knode is problematic), gimp (I haven't found a KDE replacement which can r/w .xcf image well), and synaptic (adept is feature-poorer than synaptic). VirtualBox gives out a nice KDE4 look even if KDE is not running.

gimp is the software for painting,
inkscape is the software for vetorial drawing, blender is the software for 3d, if somebody starts a port of those to Qt just to 'release the evil', send me it's name and I will bite him. Gimp and Inkscape have a decent look'n feel on KDE when QT-GTK and GTK-QT engines are used, so the toolkit visual is not a problem. blender... well, blender is fashionable on it's own fashion.

Not to mention that GIMP created GTK (or GTK was made for writing GIMP), so I highly doubt that anyone would even think of porting it to Qt.

My feedback is this :
I tried KDE4 on Debian version 4.1.2 and after using it for 2 months I decided to switch back to KDE 3.5 . The reasons behind this are several and all little ones. There isn't a BIG FAT bug that just ruined my experience , but mutilple things drove my decision to get back to KDE3. First of all the speed. The desktop seemed to me much slower in respect to KDE3. In particular Konqueror in KDE4 is REALLY slow. You can't surf websites with a lot of scripts without an headache, also I found out a lot of regressions in Konqueror and some websites that worked well with the 3.5.9 version don't work with the 4.1.2 version. Second : KDE4 seems much less polished than KDE3 overall. I noticed a lot of gliches in redrawing for example in the taskbar or in dragon player when switching from window mode to fullscreen, I also hate the new Kopete that floods you with popup windows when new messages arrive. I know that you can disable this, but really, the old version was fine. Third: I don't know why, but trying to run a GTK application by clicking on an icon in dolphin make the application run with a strange color palette (everything is light grey making it difficult to read the text that blends with the background color that is also light grey of a little lighter variant). Launching it from Konsole is fine (I have this problem with eclipse in particular). Fourth: I still use some KDE3 application like K3b and Amarok and because of this a lot of KDE3 libraries are installed . After using for 2 months KDE4 I liked it, but I realized that I felt better when using KDE3, so I decided to switch back. My 2 cents Bye Marcello |
