How is the state of the current KDE trunk? Is usable? Better than KDE 4.1? What direction is taking? |

I'm using 4.1 on KDEmod at the moment. The vanilla Arch KDE 4 install is actually much faster than KDEmod, but it comes with a ton of useless programs that I can't remove and I prefer being able to choose exactly what's on your system.
@Kariddi, I briefly enabled the Unstable repository. Here are some of the things I noticed: +Everything is noticeably faster. It's pretty impressive, actually. +In the System Monitor, "worksheets" are now referred to simply as "tabs". +Notifications are fixed. They appear in the bottom right corner and have a snazzy new look. +Kickoff had a black theme instead of 4.1's white theme. It looks sharp. +The icon for recently plugged in devices is different. It's a monitor with a USB symbol on it. This is a nice change which should help to eliminate confusion with the current icon. +Input Settings is moved to the Computer Administration group of System Settings. I guess they're taking the first steps to improving it. +When I pressed Print Screen, KSnapShot worked! +It's easy to move the task bar around now. -I ran into various strange crashes, but that's to be expected. -The system didn't seem to remember when I deleted my desktop CPU monitor widget. It would keep coming back over and over. -I had strange sound issues. When I played Flash videos and stuff in Firefox, I got sound. Amarok didn't give me any sound. It threw up some notification about Phonon, but it was cut off so I don't know what it was talking about. -Dragon Player was borked. -System Monitor should have the "open/close" tab buttons that applications like Konqueror and KTorrent have. It would promote UI consistency. -Kickoff still needs a lot of work to improve its shortcomings if it's going to stay as the default menu. Overall, it wasn't stable enough for me to stick with so I would just stick with 4.1 until they work on it some more.

I have geforce 8800gts at home, so I'm stuck with kde3. Likewise, on my work computer (intel gpu) kde4 is too slow, whereas gnome flies (ubuntu intrepid), so I'm sticking with hardy and kde3 there as well.

I have kde 3.5.10 installed on Ubuntu 8.10 (NOT Kubuntu!). Usually, I use fluxbox to run KDE applications, especially Konqueror. My fluxbox menu is customized to take advantage of all of Konqueror's awesome features.
There is a part of me that is secretly and irresistably drawn to KDE 4, even though I profess to hate it. I try each new release for a while, decide that I love it, and then decide that I hate it again. |

KDE 4.1.3 on Debian GNU/Linux, it works really great and it's much better than KDE 3.5

So what are the things that are better useing KDE 4.1.3 ??? or What are things NOT as good in KDE 3.5 vs KDE 4.1.3 ??? I have a real show stoper with Firefox in both. All my users now use WinXP-PRO SRP-3/Firefox as bad as that is. If I can NOT get Firefox to work they stay with WinXP SRP-3/Firefox. Anyone kow anything about KDE/Firefox setup ??? |

Yes. Works fine. Depending on how you set it up, it may look out-of-place (apart from the file-selector, it looks great on my setup) but otherwise works fine. Some more information on what your showstopper is would be good to have in order figure out what the problem is.

been using kde 4 exclusively since July 14 this year, It happens to be my birthday, and also the day I received my laptop
![]() ![]() All I had available to replace windows on the Evo at the time was a Kubuntu alpha (3?) disk. No showstoppers for me other than the broken-at-the-time knetworkmanager. Thankfully my old laptop does not have an nvidia gpu (uses the native linux open source ati drivers), which is probably why I have had a better experience than some Currently running 4.2 beta now I put my dead desktop's drive in usb enclosure, surprised myself when the laptop booted from that (hardy), so I tried upgrading to Intrepid. It was my first trouble-free upgrade I have ever had with Kubuntu, going back nearly to the beginning

I hated GNOME... Ever since KDE4 replaced KDE 3.x in the distributions i use, I am a happy GNOME user that will probably never turn back to KDE....
I guess that explains my attitude and thoughts about the **** named KDE4 or whatever.... ![]() |
