Running KDE 4.3.1 in Kubuntu 9.0.4 AMD64 on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop at 2.16Ghz with 3GiB RAM and 160GiB HD. Been trying and crashing ever since KDE 4.3 came out, working through the bugs and restoring from a huge backup on a USB External. Yeah, I know it's not recommended by Kubuntu, but, someone has to try this stuff and I have nothing to lose, having another computer to fall back on. The only thing that failed on this install was another network manager that came with KDE 4.3.1 that looked like a cell phone in black and white. It told me that it would crash my desktop and I should depend on the original knetwork manager I removed it from the taskbar and no problems since in two days of running. You might think this is a short time, well I usually crash sooner. I try all of my applications and push the limits. Sorry I did not join the forum earlier, been kind of busy LOL.

Update, it crashed four days later. This time it was the kdm that went south. Tired of fighting it, I reinstalled 9.04, Restored from my external HD and proceeded to upgrade to Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha 5. Now that is working, a different network manager and got rid of kdm. The only bugs I am having are with some of the newer versions of software that comes with it. I turn in the bug reports and move on. KDE 4.3.1 is working great, so is the new Kernel 2.6.31. I'll try to keep you posted.

I'd personally like to say, 'thank you', just in case the KDE developers haven't read this yet. I'm glad to see someone highlighting problems for the reason of improving the software. There are (were?) too many screamers about for my liking.

Another observation, perhaps not exactly KDE related, but, from an update in Karmic: First a little package called lib32asound2 was removed during an upgrade.then I lost the flashplugin for my browser, Firefox 3.5.3. It took all day hunting through tons of past posts to find this solution. If you are interested I went to: "http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772490" It was one line that did it for me (sudo apt-get install nspluginwrapper flashplugin-nonfree) That's after making sure flash 9.x is removed.

Crashed and burned. Another KDM, the KDE Desktop Manager, upgrade did me in. Not only that I crashed again trying to get back where I was. I have used my live CD to get back to Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.2.2 twice today and I'm tired. the first time I tried to use the Kubuntu Karmic Koala live CD and could not get anything to work towards using my wireless network. So I have actually used three CDs today, one of them twice and I'm fried. I'm going to try to turn this in, I'm sure there is already a bug report on this from many others. I had three days of fine desktop and excellent upgrades before this happened. Not sure if I want to go through it again. I know this setup right now is stable. If I decide to go back again, I'll keep you posted.

Did you miss me? I took a break from Kubuntu and tried pure Debian with KDE. They claim to have a more stable system, sorry, they are having their own problems. The least of which is bugs in their installation concerning cups, sigh. I'm back up with Kubuntu 9.10, KDE 4.3.1 installed from a live CD and I broke for an Ethernet cable. 25 feet at almost a dollar a foot with tax, ouch. It is worth it to have something that is this nice. No offense, but, pure Debian is crude and harsh compared to Kubuntu. I know Kubuntu is based on Debian too, but, the menus are put together better and the GUI is easier to use. Only 347 updates since I installed it this morning, LOL

I am reading this and I am wondering why I am having no problems at all. Well except Akondi doesn't work but I don't even know what that is. I'm using 9.04 with KDE 4.3 for about a month. It's working like a dream. No glitches... nothing. I'm wondering if there are other people out there that are stable as well?

I think Akondi works with things like your PIM as it's database, not as a separate entity. As for stable, I was stable with Kubuntu 9.04 until I upgraded to KDE 4.3 then my crashes started. It has something to do with the hardware too. Now I am stable once again, keeping my fingers crossed and working out the bugs. If it works, don't fix it. As for me, I'm always trying something new.

Yeh thats what I'm doing. I'm not screwing with it. I'm just letting it work. It did take me a couple installs to get it right. I'm always afraid one of these updates is going to jack my system though.
As for Akondi. It says there is some dbus issue but I don't have the energy of mind to screw with it, and like I said. I don't even know what it is or does. So I'm just leaving it alone.

The truth will out. I crashed this morning running Kubuntu 9.10 alpha 5, after update and restart I got a black screen. Go figure. I went across the room to my eMac and downloaded Kubuntu 9.10 alpha 6 and started over. I wasn't going to do that, but, sometimes you got to do what you got to do. I was hoping to last out the next month for the real thing, Oh Well, sigh. At least I backup and restore is easy. Incidentally, the first computer I built had two 5 1/4" drives and no hard drive. The green screen was the pits. We've come a long way baby.

* Madman wonders if this is to do with the new kernel...

No, Madman, see the link below from Kubuntu Forums. It has to do with X-org and the Kubuntu desktop in the upgrade. It's just one of those things you take a chance on when you use a distribution in Alpha. You might join this group too, they are up to date the same as KDE forums.

Aah, cool. OK then.
Erm, anyone want to divulge what the new X.org provides that's better then the currently-used version...?
