As konqueror here can't display a website called www.126.com,so I'll have to use firefox while kopete's qq are totally unusable,I need a official gtk software, that's qq |

Firefox, (The best browser imho), with a little tweaking it can integrated into KDE to a point, shame it pulls down so many dependencies from GNOME though.
OOo, (compatibility), but it's bloody ugly on KDE. The work mentioned in the following blog post looks promising http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3983. I'd love to see it go gold. Mplayer / SMplayer, (format support), although I'm running the pre release of Kaffeine for KDE 4, (which isn't bad for an app under heavy development), sometimes I need to fall back to the others though. Wine, (I can't live without a healthy dose of WoW every once in a while). ![]() Synaptic, (better range of features than adept or Kpackagekit). I'd love to see the latest Kpackagekit backported though as the changelogs indicate quite a few improvements. For the record I'm using the KDE 4 port of K3B from the PPA repositories with no problems whatsoever. I dug up the Kaffeine KDE 4 port from the PPA repos also, for those who would like to check out how it's coming along. Cheers. |

Wicd; Stable, secure and fast. Loads and connects before the splash disappears.
Synaptic; The only sane package manager tool out there, PackageKit needs a lot more work, and to be honest, I really rather wish they just took apart Synaptic for most of it. Banshee: Yes, I love Amarok, but only Banshee can connect to my iPod, plus 'playlists' are not my thing, if I cant tell it just to play Track A then move onto the next Track, I'm not interested. Firefox: Yes, Konq is good. But not good enough. I like my add-ons :P VLC: Strongest and most robust multimedia player I know. If it can't be read by VLC, it isnt a media file. Shame the damn video detaches itself from the unit, though. Stelleraium: Something just has to be said for panoramic star-gazing :P

Really? Amarok connects just fine to my iPod (or rather: it did before the iPod died...)
The first point I agree with. Most of the time at least...I actually have one video-file that VLC does not know what to do with but mplayer plays just fine. The latter though...mine are shown in the same interface - the window just resizes itself to accomodate the video (version 0.9.9a). I have seen that behavior before though but can't recall exactly what the problem was. |

Well, Amarok's applet for iPods's pops up when the iPod is connected...but it does nothing (iPod icon, plus symbol, minus symbol) clicking on any of them does nothing.
The bug in VLC should be fixec by the 1.0.0 version...I hope. |

hope i won't get kicked off the forum for this, but these days i'm mainly running fluxbox as WM, with KDE 4.3 apps. my computer is a dinosaur, and while KDE 4.3 is stable and works well, it's just a tad too slow on my machine, even w/o window effects, etc.
oh, and opera & FF, and openOffice. konqueror doesn't work well with all the sites i need, specially heavy java / ajax stuff, and the last time i tried koffice, i found it still more troublesome than OO. |

Firefox: it has many extensions. I will not switch to any browser without those extensions.
Pidgin: it supports sametime good, Kopete's meanwhile protocol cannot display utf-8 message/contacts correctly. Thunderbird: it has good performance accessing IMAP mail servers. Kmail as an IMAP client is too slow (it works well as a POP3 client) Compiz: it has much better performance compared to KWin. Effects which are very smooth in compiz are slower in KWin. KDE3: it has the "unique top menubar" as an official option. KDE4 still does not include it as an official plasimoid, Xbar implementations are not an option since it force you change from Oxygen style to Bespin style. |

I really don't like gtk/gnome applications just because the toolbars are not configurable enough for my needs (size and order of icons, adding/removing buttons, changing icons for buttons). But I use the following non-KDE apps:
- Gimp: I love its window and menu structure, there is no KDE alternative - Inkscape: there's also no KDE alternative - OpenOffice.org: looks more like an office application than koffice... it's more functional than shiny. - audacity for music editing - xmms for the on-the-fly mp3/ogg/wav (Amarok2 for the whole collection, not really usable like Amarok1 was, but it's enough for just playing random files) - no KDE alternative. Alternatives are VLC and aqualung for me but those aren't KDE applications as well - in search for something that manages my iPod since Amarok2 lost all its functionality - gtkpod? - Xsane for scanning because Scanlite still is a mess - gnome-games (card games and mahjongg) because they are a lot more responsive/fast than the KDE4 counterparts - VLC media player and kaffeine of KDE3 for watching videos - Dragonplayer is too basic If I could I would use tasty menu or the gnome menu in KDE4... |

Now that I completely switched to konqueror (+arora every now and then), the only non kde apps I'm using are
- OpenOffice.org: I'm watching with interest the koffice development. Koffice is moving a lot faster than OOo... maybe in a year or so... maybe ![]() - ufraw: showfoto is great, but ufraw is a lot easier to use with my nef files. - skype: This is not only one of the few non-kde apps I use, it is the only proprietary soft in my computer (not considering the bios...)

Firefox & Thunderbird - for interoperability.
Gimp - because it's Gimp. VLC - a swiss army knife and has quick access to brightness controls. Synaptic - it's easier to find things. Have to say that I LOVE KDE4.3. This is a truly gorgeous environment for a superb OS. To the devs, you are on the right track. Keep up the great work! (From a non-techy convert: XP > Linux/Gnome > Linux/KDE)
