Firefox and Thunderbird - have used them for years on various Linuxes, and Windows as well.
Gimp - I am not that fond of the interface, but I do not know of a superior Linux app. (I haven't tried Krita for a while now.) Synaptic - it has never let me down. What KDE 3 apps will I miss if I upgrade to KDE 4? 1. KDar 2. (most of all) Quanta Plus. I use it almost every day. Will it eventually be ported to KDE 4, or does anyone know a way of getting it to run on KDE 4? |

Many thanks. Looks like bad news re. Quanta. I guess I will cling to KDE 3.5.10 for as long as I can and make a decision about my options sometime in the future. |

-linuxdc++
-wine (under playonlinux) -zim desktop wiki - lets me organize my notes in a hierarchical structure -openoffice - compatibility with ms docs -opera - konqueror is useless compared with opera or firefox -synaptic and apt-get -smplayer - dragon player is not nearly as usable -vlc (as backup) -acetoneiso -avidemux (qt) -KlamAV -network manager (gnome) - the kde network manager doesn't work with my huawei e160e 3G modem (at least in the KDE4.3.5 version) - because I have to specify manually a custom DNS server -gtkorphan - kleansweep lets me delete individual orphaned files (and I succeded with it to make my OS unbootable) instead of orphaned packages (which is what I need) |

Gimp 2.6.7 - I like it a lot!
Synaptic - Simply better than kpackagekit, which IMO, is a piece of junk.

usual suspects:
firefox - it's a workhorse. But rekonq is the future. Virtual Box These I need for work: Skype, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Abbyy Finereader, Trados (translation software), MS Office (just necessary) No KDE alternative or not yet fully functional: wicd gnome-bluetooth eMule Google Maps - well, Marble may be better in future, but why would I use it without those google copyrighted maps.. Gimp - no KDE alternative, not even planned. Krita partly, but different goals. eiskaltdcpp - check Valknut, its predecessor. It's UI can make you laugh. VLC - we need real KDE video player. Seriously. Special cases: evince - in Okular I can't select words by doubleclick, select tool is even not default and actual selection is really iffy process. It's a beauty for reading etc. but real work not possible at the moment. eog - unlike gwenview simple and useful. Double-click fullscreen, mouse wheel for zoom, exit on esc. Simple. Usable. |

Synaptic - because Kpackage sucks.
Iceweasel - I hate it, but Konqueror's web browsing component has real issues. Hmmm, That's really pretty much it. I do keep OO.o around; occasionally I run up against something Koffice won't do. |

Synaptic: KPackageKit still can't handle meta-packages or EULA's yet :/
Firefox: It can do just about everything; and I'd kill my poor little netbook from overload if I didnt have AdBlock+ and NoScript. GIMP: Graphics maniuplation at it's finest. Inkscape: Karbon just dosent have the feature set quite yet (still waiting on filters and some more shapes) GNOME frontend to NetworkManager: Because KNetworkManager dosent like mobile broadband modems. OpenOffice: Because I need a full office suite capable of working with MS-Office friendly files. Virtualbox: Because dealing with CD's and USB's is just too much hassle ![]() Dropbox-daemon: Ubuntu One aint a native QT app...VERY interested in OwnCloud though. PlayOnLinux: Because WINE can be a tad annoying sometimes ![]() VLC: Ok, kinda native, it does use QT, after all, can play ANYTHING whilst Dragon tends to lock up if it can't play something. Waiting for Kaffeine to come back from the dead (is it dead?) Moovida Media Center: Because I love ten-foot glossy user interfaces with meta-data downloaders. ![]() Still, if I were on GNOME, I'd have to bring down KDE because I love Okular and Kopete and Amarok and K3B and...etc etc. ![]()

KNetworkManager allows me to connect using my Nokia phone ( either via USB or Bluetooth ) just fine... although I use NetworkManager / ModemManager 0.8 though.

I'm just waiting for upgrades to KNetworkManager that can use the little USB modems, which are the same as mobile phones from a network point of view, but they have one slight alteration; they 'flip/flop', part of them acts as a memory stick with an autolaunch installer for Windows to install the required drivers, and the other part is the modem itself.
If I just plug it in, GNOME's network manager gives it the instructions to switch to modem mode, and a few other bits and peices which I don't quite understand. Apparently KNetworkManager was supposed to include this functionailty for 4.4...can anyone tell me if it's there or not?

Tasks such as that would require Root access I suspect and should probably be carried out by udev.

EDIT: Sorry, just realized I was accidently hijacking this thread
![]() We now return you to your regularly scheduled dose of KDE forums... I'm not asked for GNOME's Keyring nor root permissions to do so. I beleive the networking client must also apply limitations to the modem, less it exceeds the price plan and gets blocked. (I think) the details are in the mobile-broadband-provider-info package in the Ubuntu repos.

An update on my earlier post, as I was new to KDE at the time and sidux for that matter.
Iceweasel, Debian variant of Firefox Wine, as before I still can't get by without my regular WoW fix. OOo, however once KDE 4.4.x hits sid I'll be giving kOffice a workout. Debian Package Search, preinstalled with sidux for package information only. I've dumped synaptic, as I'm now accustomed with this tool. I use the command line exclusively for actual package management however. Graphical package tools are nigh on useless for sid anyway as dist-upgrading in a vt without x, (run level 3), is the way to go. Chromium, more out of curiosity than anything else. But gosh isn't it fast. smplayer / mplayer, for no other reason than the current offering of kaffeine still doesn't support subtitles. yakuake, just discovered this little gem recently, it's a drop down terminal app, default hotkey [f12] Cheers

Iceweasel - One word: extensions (they will always be extensions to me, never 'add-ons'). I've got a sort of shortlist of extension-provided features that I need in my browser, and I've so far found no other browser that can provide all of them, even with their own extensions. So Iceweasel stays.
Icedove - My preferred email client. I tried KMail for a while, didn't like it. I'm looking more towards Mutt than any KDE 4 mail apps right now. Deluge - KTorrent had serious memory leak problems for me in 2.x, so I dumped it in favour of Deluge. That's probably been fixed now, but I also like how Deluge can be run in a client/server model, so I'm sticking wit it. Music Player Daemon - After nine months of fighting to get Amarok 2.x working how I wanted it to, I realized I love Amarok 1.4.x, and Amarok 2.x is actually a completely different application pretending to be Amarok. So I went back to basics, using Sonata as my main client. I recently performed sudo aptitude purge amarok and haven't looked back. I may try a KDE 4 client at some point, but Sonata's good for now. Geeqie - I used to use Kuickshow, but the KDE 4 version of that isn't in Debian's repositories due to its continued dependence on imlib1 (which Debian considers to be deprecated). There seems to be an impasse for now, with the Kuickshow developer saying libimlib2 isn't a suitable replacement for imlib1, so I'm using Geeqie until I find a suitable KDE 4 replacement. Irssi - IRC is an entirely text-based protocol, so I consider graphical and mouse-based interfaces to it to be ridiculous. Hence, Irssi. I don't plan on moving, though Konsole is my way of accessing it, so it's sort of a KDE 4 app in a roundabout way. SMPlayer - Last time I tried KMPlayer, I found full screen used an auto-hiding panel at the bottom of my screen for control, but didn't override display of the auto-hiding Plasma panel I always have at the bottom of my screen. Cue me fighting to make KMPlayer's panel float without making Plasma's panel float, which wasn't fun. SMPlayer seems to work better, and works good enough that I never even have to touch VLC now. VirtualBox - The best virtualization app I've ever used. Qt-based and KDE 4 doesn't have anything native that competes, so it just makes sense. GIMP - I tried Krita, but found its resizing methods to be the sort I'd consider primitive back in 1999. Maybe it's improved, but I haven't bothered checking, GIMP works too well. OpenOffice.org - Never tried KOffice, and OO.o integrates pretty well with KDE 4, so I see little reason to. GVIM - Show me a good, graphical, KDE 4 version of vim, and I'll try it. Mousepad - I've yet to find a better free software clone of Notepad. FileZilla - I may try Kasablanca, if a stable KDE 4 version is ever released. Or another KDE 4 FTP client, I'm not picky. aptitude - Debian don't use PackageKit yet, and KPackage is horrible. 'nuff said.
pointlessness - A rock of stability in a computing life eternally ruined by 'adventures'...
