Running Mandriva 2009.1, previously KDE 4.2.4. Upgraded to 4.3.1 following sparse instructions on www.kde.org/download/#4.3, using the Mandriva urpmi utility.

Restarted x, went through a couple of splash screens, then gave a black screen with only the terminal window. No menu bar, no right-click menus. From the terminal window, I am able to start applications if I know the app name, such as firefox, etc. If I minimize any/all windows, they completely disappear from the screen, and there is no way to get them back. (I can alt-tab between the windows, as long as I don't minimize them). The mouse pointer-cursor remains active in the black screen.

One clue that I get is that if I look on the help | about KDE on the terminal window, it shows version 4.2.4. Does that suggest that something in the upgrade to 4.3 is incomplete?

Nothing obvious to me in the Xorg.0.log - pasting it makes this message too long for them forum. I will post it as a separate message immediately following this one.

For video, I am running a new EVGA card, GeForce 8400 GT. I installed the nVidia driver 185.n a few days ago. The rest of the machine is a Dell 400SC 2.8 GHz, 2GB mem, 400 GB storage.

Help, I am essentially bricked at the moment!

Thanks,
JimR

It does look like an incomplete update....

In terminal as root:
Code: Select all
su
urpmi --auto-update -v

post any error messages here.

Also what does this say:
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-url

You can also try to start 'plasma' or 'plasma-desktop' from the terminal. Which terminal emulator is it (I guess xterm)?

OK, I did the urpmi --update-all -v. There were many unresolved updates (I think it was 324, but it scrolled off the terminal buffer, so I was not able to copy the beginning.)

That got me to being able to start a desktop that was operational. It had some problems, but I started working through those.

Somewhere along the line, I mis-set "something". Now all of my application windows have no title bar at the top, which also means that they don't have a minimize/maximize/resize/move capability. The icons of the running applications no longer display on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I cannot alt-tab between applications -- it's almost like I can only run a single application at a time.

I have seen an error dialog pop up a few time at startup, to the effect of "the kwin windows manager has become unstable (crashed a number of times). You can select another windows manager to run (but there is only kwin in the pull-down list). I have searched /var/log/messages and Xorg.0.log and user for this unstable message, but I cannot see it.

I tried reducing the screen resolution, but that did not help. I tried changing the nVidia driver, but that just bricked the display again, so I switched it back.

Can somebody point me to what I can reset to get the display back to normal? Then I can start back working on the other issues.

Thanks,
JimR

It's 'urpmi --auto-update -v' not 'urpmi --update-all -v'. So run it again until it says that all packages are up-to-date.

After you make sure all packages are updated, try renaming .kde4 in your /home.

Yes, that was what I was running (I typed the previous message from a tired memory, since I could not copy/paste between screens.

It turned out that the new problem I was describing

was caused by having previously enabled compiz-fusion. From what I read elsewhere, compiz-fusion does not play nicely with KDE 4.3. I disabled it, and got back to a semi-normal desktop.

Now I can work through the other problems in a sane and rational way.

Thanks,
JimR
