Hello,
tried KDE4 for the x-th time, still everything is not usable. Thanks to you developers for providing such great openSource SW (KDE3, etc) But: Are you actually using KDE4 yourselves? i cannot image how, because EVERYTHING i want to to is **** to do. Plasmoids do not help me then ![]() What is the reason to make a GUI so much GRAPHiCAL nonuser INTERFACE? I am pretty serious, i cannot understand why KDE4 is so hard to use in all terms? Btw: i was not focusing on the technical backgrounds KDE4 introduced (pretty good/helpful for developers) Regards, Pete |

Most Developers indeed use KDE4 fulltime. And many others, too. It would be nice to hear real examples of what you consider a failure or hard to use. Makes it hard to discuss without examples.

Been using KDE4 daily since KDE4.2, albeit with some KDE3 apps, notably Kontact, KOffice, K3b, KMyMoney and Kaffeine, and had no problems. Would like to use KDE4 Kontact but couldn't get my head round it at all; so went back to KDE3 for the time being.

It would also be nice if you told us what version of KDE 4 you are using (there is a huge difference between them) and which distribution you are using.
And for the record, yes I use KDE 4 full time. Most people on this forum seem to.

Another full-time kde4 user here. Kde4 is rock solid for me since 4.2.1 (now I'm using 4.3.1). And I'm using the "unstable" repositories of my distro...
As neverdingo and TheBlackCat said, examples and more info about your problems will be useful.

Well, to be fair, I can't imagine why KDE3 users would want to come here, except to complain, and even I got tired of that. In my opinion, KDE4 is slow, cluttered, hard to figure out, and a pain to set up, and then, finally, sort of boring and uninspiring to use. But it's perfectly useable, and lots of people love it. Above all, KDE is here. It's severe. Get used to it. In my case, getting used to it meant working out a plan to run a KDE3 "virtual live CD" system with Slax indefiitely. The OS itself is on first partion of the hard drive, but it's read-only, like a live CD. All my personal information is on the /home partition. When I reboot, the /home partion is kept, but the root partion, like a live CD, is completely refreshed. Nothing lives in /root past a reboot. The idea is to add an extra layer of security, hoping to to make up for the eventual security risks of running a legacy OS. So, in theory, I can keep running this for as long as I like. Slax 6.1.2 is essentially a hack of Slackware 12.2, and all the software from Slackware 12.2 can run on it. I have everything I need archived and backed up to keep running KDE3 for as long as I want. While I don't like using KDE4, and I think there's a lot to be critical of in the way it was rolled out, there are some good sound reasons why I believe that it's taking Desktop development in the right direction. I support it as a project. I used to consider the inconvenience of finding my own way to be a necessary sacrifice for the future of free software. Now I consider it to be part of the fun. If you want to use the new desktop, you can. If you want to keep using the old desktop, I found a way that suited me, and you probably can too There's probably a lot of ways of doing that. If you want the old desktop to be made new with development, and you want someone else to do it for you, you want too much. |

I'm not a developer (I do science daily, although I know a bit of programming), and I'm using KDE 4 full time, even when working. Actually, my productivity has increased...
