Dolphin automatic video preview

Sun Oct 25, 2009 1:25 pm
:?

i was looking for this automatic preview plug in for dolphin and i think i can remember on kde 3 there was and it was based on kaffeine.

for now i can use a preview and play mp3 and video but clicking on play instead with the older plug in i could use automatic play.

so someone plans to do this plug in for kde4 or not?

or maybe xD is it already there but i don't know?

i use kubuntu 9.10

you need mplayerthumbs but the default backend is bugged, so you need to run mplayerthumbsconfig and set the backend from phonon to mplayer (you of course need mplayer installed as well)

no you have not understood. or i have explained bad anyway:

if you look here

http://imagebin.ca/img/lsF2Wtr.png

you'll see i can use preview with mplayerthumbs and it's ok.

but when i select a video file on dolphin.....dolphin can play it without any player.

the only stuff i can't see is the automatic play that i am sure there was on kde3.

i have TO Click on the icon.

instead on kde3 there was a plug-in with many other buttons and an option :
play automatically.

I think you are referring to a video kpart, which allows you to embed a video player in konqueror. Konqueror can still do that, but Dolphin does not support kparts at all. You cannot embed a document viewer, picture viewer, video viewer, or any other sort of viewer in Dolphin like you could and still can in konqueror. That is the sort of advanced functionality that is reserved for konqueror. Dolphin is solely a file browser, not an all-purpose viewer. That being said, if you have the information panel open in Dolphin, you should be able to watch the video (with just basic controls) in the information panel (at least in 4.3). You can drag the panel to undock it and then make it much larger if the video size is too small.

yes of course is kpart stuff but i think dolphin should use that stuff i remember i used on kde3

i mean kde3 +dolphin + kaffeine kpartstuff

because with dolphin +kmplayer_part as you can see in the picture i can play the video on dolphin,...

anyway i guess , at this point, there is not the plugin

and... in nautilus you can select a file and listen the mp3 automatically .. i will wait :/

As I said, you can use the information panel in Dolphon to view the video. The same goes for mp3 files, you can listen to them in the information panel. There should be player controls there if you are using KDE 4.3. It is better for listening to music files since resolution is not an issue.

The whole point of dolphin was to avoid kparts, to make something very specialized and very suited to file managing, as opposed to konqueror which was designed to do everything and thus was rather unwieldy when doing any of those things. If you want kparts you will need to use konqueror, Dolphin will not be getting them.

I CAN PLAY THE FILES WITH DOLPHIN
BUT I CAN'T PLAY THEM AUTOMATICALLY.I HAVE TO CLICK ON THE BUTTON.LIKE YOU CAN SEE IN THE SCREEN-SHOT
THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

i can't explain better. it seems you have not seen the screen-shot ..bah. anyway...

there is not point avoiding kpart on dolphin. if you look at Mac or Nautilus,so gnome,

you will see that mp3 starts automatically on file manager and it's very comfortable feature.on kde3 there was with konqueror and with dolphin.

on kde4 you have to click on dolphin button,Kmplayer-part, ,LIKE YOU CAN SEE IN THE SCREEN-SHOT, to play. and so the problem is not kpart-stuff but use kpart to play AUTOMATICALLY the file video or audio instead to force people to click.

yes of course it can seems a stupid thing but it's not , because multimedia files are the most used stuff on computers so to be able to play a video or an audio files inside filemanagers is an important feature for a OS, i can't spend a lots of time seeking or filtering by name people must have a way to play quickly video\audio files.

i can't explain the issue better. but this is a problem for sure. Evolute desktop manager do this.
at least for multimedia file , video\audio.

for me the topic is closed.

First, the picture doesn't work for me. Second, you have to click at least once to listen to music, otherwise you will get random sound every time you select a file. Even multimedia apps require you to click a play button after you select a file. Dolphin is exactly the same. Third, Dolphin does not support kparts. This was an intentional design decision. Dolphin is a file manager, unlike konqueror which is designed to do everything.

To be fair, in Nautilus in Gnome all you do is hover your mouse over a media file and the audio plays in the background for as long as you hold your mouse there. It's great for when you haven't heard a song before, or when you have non-standard filenames for files.

I too wish this feature were in Dolphin. This is what the OP is referring to: http://www.harshj.com/2007/03/17/audio-preview-for-nautilus-gnome-file-manager/

I came from Linux Mint Main (Gnome) to Linux Mint KDE. This was the first major difference I noticed when coming from Gnome. Although overall I love KDE infinitely better then Gnome, this feature is missed.

Cheers.

well someone has my problem too.

but the strange think is this, when you try to upload somewhere , it is shown a popup to select your file and...

you have much more control and :) play automatically

see here

(it is italian but i hope you can understand that automaticamente = automatically and as said from dequire , yes you have only to "hover" your mouse over the media to listen it .)

That's how it works in the file selection dialogue of KDE... hover your mouse over a file and it'll play in the sidebar automatically. Goes for videos and music.

That's what the OP's trying to say: he wants that functionality in Dolphin's main window.

I know this thread is really old, but I was looking for this exact idea in the KDE brainstorm forum and couldn't find it, and this thread came up.

I also understand this is what the OP wanted:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2453/previewwp.png

I also know some people who'd like to have the option for "play automatically" on Dolphin's "Information" panel. Should I create the idea on the Brainstorm forum? Or maybe a wish on b.k.o? :)
