Note that a developer in the last bug you mentioned wasn't able to reproduce either.... I suspect these bugs have long been solved...

No time to read this whole thread. Some of my reasons to agree with the topic:

  • Konqueror has browser like hierarchical bookmarking system. Very usefull to jump directly to a location on your disk, but I use it primarily to go straight to a remove folders
  • Extensive support of protocols of which I use fish:// the most.
  • The different split screen options available
  • The embedded editing features. Remote files are edited with minimum delay semingly without starting another application and it is configurable.
  • It used to have versioning system support through extensions. Later version have less support because more attention goes to Dolphin now :-(
  • It used to have a just-enough-for-my-use file search that disappeared when I changed to 4.6

I hope you guys developers listen, because there are few alternatives that join all these characteristics. Please let me know if I am mistaken in this.

Sooo... why didn't they just stick this new search functionality into Konq? I'm sorry, but I still don't understand why a new program was necessary.

The search function was dropped from Konqueror and it just doesn't work in Dolphin. Tried to find all png files in a folder and it just couldn't do it. I probably downgrade my KDE for this reason. I hate file indexers!

finding all png files in the current folder is easy, simply filter the folder with the phrase png

No need to do some kind of search for that.

No indexing is required to search files/folders, at least by simple file name in Dolphin.

I am very worried since Dolphin and ReKonq are around, as I have the feeling that Konqueror is getting less attention from developers.

I have a related question: what will happen to the package konq-plugins in the long term? In my distro (Kubuntu Maverick) description of this package it says that
"These plugins are not part of the official KDE Software Compilation, they
are a KDE Extragear software and may get out of sync with Konqueror."
and apt-get proposes the package for autoremoval.

As a related topic, can anyone tell me if there currently are alternatives (in Konqueror and/or ReKonq/Dolphin) to _easily_ do the following things, all available via konq-plugins:
-use bookmarklets (MiniTools)
-accept/reject cookies (KHTMLSettings)
-load images (KHTMLSettings)
-change browser ident.
-adblock
-list all links for downloading (Download Manager)
-filter files (Directory Filter, now a separate search bar: in KDE3 it used to be merged with the search bar of konqueror, and it was case-insensitive, which made much more sense)

Thanks

Dolphin has a filter bar in addition to the search bar, and has all along. You can set a toolbar button for it, set a keyboard shortcut, or do what I do and have it always visible.

Rekonq has integrated adblock with automatic filter updating, has an option right in the main menu for changing the browser identification, can be set to ask before accepting cookies, can be set to not autoload images, and can download all links in a page with kget from the right-click menu. I am not sure about bookmarklets, if not you can make a feature request in bugs.kde.org.

Hello,

I apologize if I didn't read all the threads, but I have some suggestions.

When I have my system installed (I use Sabayon/Gentoo) I always have to go through reconfiguring all settings in Dolphin as it is delivered, but all the so-called missing things like no grag'n-drop to folders do work, it's just a matter of setting in the Settings->Configure Dolphin and Configure Toolbars. In fact all the boxes that are "unticked" have to be "ticked".
- Editable Location bar
- Show full path inside location bar
- Show filter bar
- in View modes - Expandable folders
- in Navigation - Open folders during drag and drop
- General - Use common view properties
- Delete files and folders
- Rename inline
- Context menu - Show 'Delete' command
Show 'Copy to' and 'Move to'
I also have to add the Toolbar icon for Places because it makes it easier to access my drive and USB drive with one click.

In the end the way I have it configured very much resembles Konqueror. In fact I stopped using Konqueror as my default file browser, because I simply got used to it. To put it bluntly, the default config of Dolphin in my Sabayon is rather irritating and pretty much I had the same experience when I first worked with Dolphin - it took me quite some time to get used to the changes and to find what I wanted.

I can also understand it's sometimes better to rewrite some code of programs from scratch and I am not surprised this was done.

At the moment I really don't have any major problems with using Dolphin, in fact I every time I reconfigure it I find some nice "hidden" features.

Here's how I have it all set:

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks that works indeed. I still find it weird that the filter is case-insensitive in Dolphin and case-sensitive in Konqueror, maybe I should file a bug about it.

I'm sure it can be set to do all these things, opening the settings, changing and saving them, and then having to repeat the operation on every change.. that's why I was asking if there's an easy way, such as the one provided by KHTMLSettings (1 mouse click).

Setting sites to ask before accepting cookies is very tiresome and time consuming (pretty much every site wants to put a few cookies). I really prefer to reject by default and be able to add exception with 1 mouse click, as allowed by KHTMLSettings. Alternatively a keybord shortcut would be better than nothing, but none of these options are accessible via shortcuts.
Oh and a toolbar button would be the best.

Have you submitted bug reports asking for an load images right-click and toolbar button, an "add cookie exception" right-click and toolbar button, and bookmarkley support? (the latter is unlikely right away, or perhaps at all until plugins are working) It looks like the others are already just as easy as in konqueror.
