KDE 4.4 eating up more RAM than 4.3

Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:49 pm
Given the same settings on both versions and after numerous testing, upon bootup, KDE 4.4 is eating up *slightly* more RAM than KDE 4.3, at least 25 MB more on the average. Ok, this is small, however, it could eventually add up if the trend continues. This is the first time I've noticed a RAM increase in a while between version changes. I realize the developers mentioned they fixed numerous bugs from the previous version, but shouldn't they be working on getting it lighter? Where's the most likely culprit for this additional RAM usage? Can it be attributed to the newer QT version 4.6.1, or something else? Opinions much appreciated, thanks.

I upgraded to KDE 4.4.0 from KDE 4.3.5 today and I can confirm an increase in KDE's footprint by about 20MB to 25MB.

Has anyone opened a bug report regarding this?

Yes, I opened a bug report today. Please state your opinion on it, thanks. Here is the link: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=226136

It is bug report #226136, "KDE 4.4 eating up more RAM than 4.3".

I need to sign up for an account on the bug tracker, which I will do soon.

Hopefully we can get the KDE developers to tighten their code. It would be terrible if KDE started to rival Windows in its footprint.
