I'm doing a new emoticon set for KDE (and other software) and would like to know which size is the most popular.
My current plan is to make several sizes of it, but first I'd concentrate on the most popular one. Of course I don't plan on doing sizes that no-one bothers to use anyway as well ![]() I won't show you and sneak previews yet, but expect a very large set of simple and clean emoticons soon-ish ![]()

I voted for "bigger then 128x128" because big icons could always be scaled down

Note that bigger icons usually will have much more detail which will be destroyed at lower resolutions. I would recommend 22x22 emoticons as that is what will likely be used by apps.

The emoticons that I plan to make will be *very* simple and clean, so for this particular case a bigger image wouldn't bring any details and nothing more then the joy to the people who like their emoticons to take up half the IM window.
In fact, I'm very much planning to make a version that would be so small, it would be as big as the default font. I hope it'll still look good then :] But, for consistency's sake, I think it best if this poll will be relevant to a *general* usage and question which emoticon size is the most desired in the KDE SC userbase.

I think 16x16 is enough... At least for emoticons.

What are you making them with? Have you considered making them as vector graphics?

I'm making a very oldskool blockish emoticon set which is meant to go as flush with the text as possible. I have considered vectoring them, but after intitial trials and many talks with people who make art for KDE more often then I do, I decided to pixel-art them together. So far I'm thinking of making a 22x22 version and then a tiny one that'd be about as big as normal font, so it wouldn't mess up the line spacing when it's used ![]() ...I'd be awesome if we could make an emoticon set that would follow the font — by size as well as colour (or even style)! But I suppose that'd quite some ordeal to make ![]()

OK, I've decided that I'll make:
[*] a 22x22px set for normal users; and [*] a smaller then 16x16px set for those who'd like to have smilies be about as big as their fonts. I'm really busy right now, so I can't promise anything, but I'll try to get it out as soon as possible. Since this poll is intended for a general opinion on general emoticons, keep voting! ![]()

Well, if anyone's interested, here's the fruits of your cooperation: OpenHeads black. Other colours and a smaller (cca. 10x10) size may follow.
Note: this is *not* the thread to discuss my emoticon set.

scalable - you never know what resolutions the future holds - yes, even emoticons.
at least "of all sizes" (could be advantageous at extreme sizes). |
