Setting the timezone is unfriendly!

Thu Apr 15, 2010 1:43 am
Hi, this is my 1st post and I think I've picked the right forum!

I was just looking to change the timezone (time zone?). I'm running KDE 4.3.? I think. (Linux Mint 8 KDE).

I found the "Date & Time" in System Settings, which was the obvious place to look.

However finding the timezone I wanted is well nigh impossible.

Timezone selection is done from a listbox with 3 columns, Area, Region and Comment, sorted by Area.

How I am supposed to find my timezone from that long list? In general people know their offset from GMT, I live in Massachusetts so I know I want GMT+5 with daylight savings time. But the list isn't sorted by GMT offset, it doesn't even mention GMT offset.

So the timezone I want is the area named "New York"? I don't live in New York.

Right now I'm vacationing in Arizona and I wanted to change the timezone, but I have no idea how to find the one I want. There is no timezone Area named "Arizona". I can't even sort on Region, which might help somewhat.

What I know is that if I had a list sorted by GMT offset I would look at GMT-05:00 and it would be around there.

I'm proposing that a column w/ GMT offset be added, and that all columns, or at least GMT Offset, Area and Region be able to be sorted on.

Thanks for listening,
Mike

Yeah I just gave up on timezones. It's not really that problematic for me it's just that KDE thinks my time zone is Europe/Beograd while it's Europe/Ljubljana. Thankfully it's all in same timezone, but still.
And i do use OpenNTPD.
Which reminds me that NTP option in time settings still doesn't work in KDE.

As a note, this has been recently fixed by Harald Sitter for trunk and 4.4: http://websvn.kde.org/?view=revision&revision=1112074 :)

Fixes will appear in KDE 4.4.3, and are already incorporated in the Kubuntu packages for the upcoming Kubuntu 10.04.
