I believe it is important that KDE becomes Ubuntu's default desktop for several reasons. I could just list them here and explain, but I've written an article about it on TechHaze so I I think I should just link to it and let you comment upon it.
Do you agree with me? D you even care if Ubuntu uses GNOME as default? Please give me feedback :)

You can find the article on TechHaze (it's featured on the slider on the top of the page) or via this direct link

Cheers :p

That'd be a good thing to cut down Ubuntus shares and push companies twards redhat :-) KDE 4 is not ready for business, probably will never be as major applications relay more and more on strigi/nepomuk/akonadi, which introduce administrators nightmare in a very interesing way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's a problem then it seems to be a problem that Gnome shares with KDE (or will, when Gnome 3 is released). Except that in Gnome's case they're called tracker/zeitgeist/evolution-data-server instead.

At the time of writing you can run Gnome without these but not KDE.

shouldn't this be posted on an Ubuntu (offical) forum? and I doubt you'll see any traction there.

a better topic there is why isn't the K* version given the same resources as the G* version.

Actually KDE runs just fine without any of them.

For now, yes. But unless the Gnome-devs have a change of heart that won't be the case for much longer. Again, with the caveat that I may have misunderstood something regarding the future of Gnome.

Besides, you can run KDE without them. Nepomuk must be installed, but it mustn't be enabled. Akonadi is only a requirement if you want to use Kontact.

Hm. I had to replace nepomuk daemon by a stub shellscript to prevent it from loading.

Kmail runs without akonadi? I thought it was a major design goal to port all pim apps to akonadi?

Kmail needs Akonadi only in trunk, not in 4.4 branch.

It was and still is :) This basically means, still in development

Nice article.
I really enjoy reading it, even though it's quite long.

It's very interesting to see what gnome3 brings.
Maybe there will be time when KDE4 feels polished and gnome3 is just a baby.

I just made KDE my main desktop environment. It's very configurable and looks amazing. I like the way KDE evolve step by step. I'm here to stay.

My first post in this forum. Just registered today. :)
Thank you all KDE developers.. you have done amazing work past few years with new KDE4 desktop.

I think that this is never going to happen. Personally I think it's a good idea.

Actually, I got more positive than negative feedback overall. The problem with Ubuntu is that all these ubuntu Users have tried Kubuntu. The KDE part of Kubuntu is great, but the OS lacks a lot of Canonical's innovation and effort that Ubuntu benefits from. they therefore feel that KDE is behind GNOME, when in fact the opposite is true

a better topic there is why isn't the K* version given the same resources as the G* version.

That's exactly my point in the article

It might be better to talk to Mark Shuttleworth for this topic...

If there is a vote, count me in.
