So it does! Thanks! I had completely missed that feature!

neat... but hidden. Right click should expose this feature. BTW my sub-notebook (MSI wind) has a toggling mouse button. I.e. no middle click and no three button emulation. Middle mouse clicks can be great shorcuts to have but you should never depend on them.

Comitted: http://websvn.kde.org/?view=rev&revision=875689 The "Open folder in new tab" and "Open folder in new window" patch has been mailed to the dolphin maintainer.
Yeah, I also have seen this request with the eject buttons. It is on my list.

One other question about dolphin is how is the context menu generated?
What strange behaviour made me ask? Well I was actually browsing the KDE svn repo at svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/KDE (love the way you can just dump addresses like this in the kde file browsers). I was curious as to what svn goodness might exist in the context menu so right clicked on a folder. The context menu look pretty "default" however and the only entry in the "actions" sub-menu was "Start a slideshow" which, I hate to say, is just nonsense. This kind of silly behaviour often makes me regret the existance of certain packages... in this case gwenview... because of the pollution they cause. Looking back I had similar gripes with cervisia integration in konqueror. IMHO the Tortoise family of windows explorer extensions do a much better job. One of the very few pieces of windows I'd like to have in kde... (attributing too much to windows here given tortoise cvs/svn is an opensource project). So I've already Confused this post... I guess the main point is the dolphin context menu and "helper" integration could do with some improving. Thoughts?

Well, I think one thing that may be a good idea to improve on the context menus would be to have some sort of equivalent to the Kmenueditor. That is, if say Gwenview installs some helper menus you don't like it would be easy to disable or delete just the context menu in question instead of the entire package (or manually delete the offending files from /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus or wherever the distro in question puts them).

I'd consider that a workaround. Personally I think it is a bug for a GUI to present options (not greyed) like this: i.e. that won't produce some meaningful outcome. I was thinking more along the lines of associating services with mime types. Only show the slide-show option when clicking in a folder that contains images or when a set of images are selected.

Sure, that's a great idea! Still, even if it worked like that I think some sort of easy method of re-arranging/deleting/adding servicemenus could be good idea. Say that there are 5 different servicemenus dealing with pictures installed by various packages. One is the slideshow, the other fours maybe "Make photo CD", "Tag these images as...", "Upload to picasa-web", and "Archive and mail". Personally, I would never be interested in the slide-show or Upload to picasa no matter how well a mime-associated approach would work in practice. Sure, I could delete them manually by opening a shell but I shouldn't have to (not to mention, a lot of people wouldn't know how to).

I think a fresh question would be:
What is broken/missing in Konqueror in KDE4 compared to KDE3?

But this should be a new thread. But the other question is: Should konqueror be designed as a web browser or a web/file browser as in KDE 3. But eventually this question comes late. ![]() code | cia.vc | donating KDE | wishlist |

My point was that if someone wants all those features, why can't they use Konqueror instead of Dolphin?

Because Konqueror has neither a Places sidebar nor exists a Places kioslave nor the media:/ kioslave from kde3. That's the main reason not to use konqueror, at least for me.

The GUI is unfriendly for me. Dolphin would be better with Copy To/ Move To menus from Konqueror.
