Code: Select all
 glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4

Desktop effect always worked well, now only with Xrender from avanced panel. But as I said: I don't care to use them. The problem with filling up swap space remains, in the evening the system is paralised. Using fluxbox session everything seems ok.

Unfortunately I do not know why this occurs in this case. It is likely linked to your combination of hardware and software. openSUSE 11.2 and 11.3 with KDE 4.5 perform fine on Intel GM965 hardware in my experience, so it is likely a fault with the Intel driver.

I was having the same problem.

I had to change to Compiz (because I wanted the desktop effects to stay), and then turn off the Blur effect. This has now made KDE much faster.

I am on Kubuntu and using KDE 4.5.1.

Disabling the Blur filter worked good for me. Specs:

openSuse 11.4

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

KDE 4.6

The blur filter notoriously works badly with Intel drivers (mostly due to Intel driver bugs).
