Who is responsible for the slow system, intel driver or kde?

I tried kde 4.5 on Arch linux from testing repo, and Open Suse with KDE 4.5 and Kubuntu updated from backports to kde 4.5.

On every distro kde 4.5 was much slower than kde 4.4.5.

Intel driver is not the same in any of the three Linux distributions, but kde bugs are the same. All freeze when I change the settings in sistemsettings, not just KWin effects settings, all of them.

KWin is so unbearably slow, even windows can not move without delay with composite enabled. When the composite is off everything looks good except all is ugly, of course, no transparency, no anything...Now I can not use KDE, KDE 4.4.5 was good, but this is unusable...

Who is responsible for this condition?

I use Dell laptop with intel 945 graphic and I understood that there is a problem somewhere between the driver and kde 4.5?

Not attacking anyone, just asking to explain me a problem and where is the problem, please...

Sorry if my english is bad.

Try deactivating the Blur Desktop Effect in System Settings > Desktop Effects.

This is simply a very complex effect.

Can you please try disabling the various enabled Desktop Effects to see if a particular effect causes this?

I have enabled only login, logout, minimize and transparent effect and minimize effect is so slow and with a big delay.

When I want to move windows, they hiccup and have some ugly delay.

Nothing of this is not happening without composite enabled. So, I will use KDE without composite enabled for now and will wait for KDE 4.5.1...whta can I do else? :(

Please file a bug report at bugs.kde.org

When filing, please indicate which distribution you use ( Arch in your case ) as well as the versions of X and the Intel driver.

Same problem here, after some hours with normal computing it filled 1gb ram and 2,4 gb swap space.

If you down grade the Intel driver, does the performance change?

I'll make the test, for the moment I'm just using fluxbox now and I'm back in the world of speed. So it seem's a kwin problem so far.it

Edit: downgraded to xf86-video-intel-2.10.0-1-i686 and kwin seems fast again for the moment. But I notice desktop effects do not work: it says: disactivated by another application - press alt+shift+F12 to activate, it says "effects activated" but they'are not.

I don't mind about effects, but about speed 8)

EDIT 2: I notice that the title bar of all windows only works clean with oxygen decorator, any other theme make's odd effects, mixes elements from other windows , does't show buttons and so on.

Check in ~/.xsession-errors. KWin will likely have printed the real error message there. You could also try to bypass KWin's functionality checks in System Settings > Desktop Effects > Advanced.

Can you please check that direct rendering is available using "glxinfo"?

I'm also running KDE SC 4.5 on archlinux with the intel driver (x3100 card). The blur effect works fine for me, but the Lanczos filter made desktop effects unusable for me. Luckily you can blacklist it: http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2 ... n-effects/
for me this line in my kwinrc helped:
Code: Select all
[Blacklist][Lanczos]
Intel=Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20100328 2010Q1:-:2.1 Mesa 7.8.2

hope this solves your problems...
