Your Squeeze system is a bit outdated, given currently it has - KDE 4.4.5 - xserver-xorg 1:7.5+7 - xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-6 and most probably also updated versions of your graphics driver. Suggestion is to really update your squeeze installation, first of all.

Hello,
I'm having the same problem on two different Linux systems. My personal laptop is configured as follows : - Archlinux - Linux 2.6.31.13 x86_64 - KDE 4.5.2 - Xorg 1.9.0 - NVIDIA Drivers 160.19.12 - 3 GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2Ghz - NVIDIA 9400M G - 1 external Dell 1905FP 1280x1024 Display At work, my machine is a Dell 6400 configured as follows : - Kubuntu 10.04 - Linux 2.6.32-24 - KDE 4.4.2 - Xorg 1.7.6 - NVIDIA Drivers 195.36.24 - 4 GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53Ghz - NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M - 2 Dell 2405WFP 1920x1600 Displays Compositing is disabled on both systems. On my personal laptop it's disabled both in KDE and in the Xorg configuration file since otherwise it causes video tearing when playing HD videos with VDPAU. On my work machine, it's only disabled at the KDE level. The symptoms I have experienced are that after a while the Xorg process starts takings more and more CPU resources and all the X applications start to get less responsive until it feels like running X remotely through a slow network connection. For example, scrolling a list of files in Dolphin with previews disabled in detailed view mode, will refresh only after seconds. I have noticed that the issue is more severe with KDE applications than with other applications such as Open Office or Firefox. Terminating the KDE session and re-logging will get rid of the symptoms. The issue occurs randomly and only on my personal laptop have I found a fairly reproducible of triggering the problem. On my personal laptop, if I use digikam to edit picture after about 20 to 30 aspect ratio crops and colour balances, Xorg will exhibit the behaviour described above. On my work machine, I have yet to find a reproducible sequence that will cause the symptoms. Searching on Google hasn't provided me with much. I tried disabling the PowerDevil Daemon on my work machine as was suggested in another forum and it didn't change anything. On my personal machine, I added UseEvents in my Xorg configuration file to no avail. One of my coworker, using the same software setup, also reported the same issue. His workstation was equipped with an ATI Card and Tech Support tried replacing the card with an NVIDIA one. It did not solve the problem. This hits that the problem is not related to the video hardware. I don't know where to look next to try to solve this issue. It's extremely annoying. Any help, pointers, suggestions are very welcome! |

If you disable Desktop Effects ( Alt + Shift + F12 ) does the responsiveness change?

This means that desktop effects are disabled. Without compositing, KDE won't let you enable desktop effects. I should rather say : Compositing is required for desktop effects. Personally, I fail to see the benefits of desktop effects and anything that take longer to get things done or has some kind of animation gets on my nerves. ![]() |

I have had a similar issue running Ubuntu 10.10 on nvidia.
It seems that toggling desktop effects (Alt+Shift+F12) fixes the xorg problem for a while. The cpu usage slowly increases until I repeat the process. Why is xorg showing the cpu usage and not kwin? |

I'm having a similar problem.
Has anyone had any other success with disabling Desktop effects? It seems it only help slightly, and temporarily. |

Try adding
to "Device" Section in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart computer/x11. It should look like that:

Omnomnom's solution seems to work for me as well. Turned on the "UseEvents" option and cpu load remains low ever since I restarted X11. Thanks much for the advice! Wouldn't have figured this out by myself...
