Does anything in KDE4.4.3 Work

Tue Sep 28, 2010 3:46 am
I am by no means a KDE expert, but I do know when something isn't working, and in 4 days of using KDE I am pulling my hair out.

The menu system sucks royally, the Kick Off menu is very confusing and hard to use. Much like the one in Windows 7. The classic menu is a nightmare:

No drag and drop
No sorting
The editor is joke (there are just too many problems here to mention)
This adding widgets and panels is just plain amaturish.
Another program called Device Notifier does not save when you edit entries.

and it just goes on and on.

Earlier today I rebooted and when I can back into KDE it was so totally messed up I had to just delete .kde directory and start over. Icons wee randomly all aver the place, panels were half at the top and half at the bottom, fonts were like 90pt in size, things opened updside down, and it goes on and on.

So all these links I have been reading ablut KDE sucking, are for the most part true.

Out of all the issues, I would like to know how to fix the Device Notifier one, any have any ideas.

Thanks

Don't know about the Device Notifier issue - or what you mean by saving entries to a notifier system - but if I disliked a DE that much, I'd just switch to something else. Perhaps you would be better off with Gnome or e17.

Not really. I for one have never faced any of the problems you mention (actually I might have, but your description of them is less than ideal so I'm not entirely sure, and some of them I don't even consider a problem at all; a better description would also make it easier for people to help you to solve those issues), so maybe they're distro-specific? As in, problems not with KDE itself but with the version in your operating system, due to patches applied only by said operating system or other circumstances unrelated to KDE?

You need to use the Menu Editor to rearrange the menu. Disallowing the direct rearranging of the menu is likely a design decision, to prevent it being accidentally rearranged by users ( I have seen this on systems which allow this )

Can you please elaborate on the problems with the Menu Editor and the Device Notifier? What are you trying to do in particular?
