Yeap, i was happy using kubutu for about 2 years until i made the 10.10 upgrade. The kubuntu distro updated the nvidia driver to a beta version. So.. what happend next was a deal breaker for me: X11 video output was broken.Why?-> because the proprietary beta driver doesn't work with my nvidia card! This driver was unable to handle the GPU!
For the common sense sake! why a "stable" distro put into my system a proprietary beta driver that doesn't works?. I tried to install the nouveau driver but didn't work neither. I tried to downgrade the nvidia driver but it was impossible. The only solution was to install the old stable nvidia driver from sources, but im not gonna to reinstall this thing everytime the distro updates kernel. No way! So i did the proper thing : alex@kubuntu-desktop:$~> sudo rm -rf /* bye Kubuntu! I've installed opensuse with opensource (alpha testing with experimental 3d feature enabled by default) nouveau gallium driver working out of the box : kwin effects works, and 3d games works (some of the with a couple of glitches). Everything works just fine and i love the Yast system configurator. So, opensuse is a very nice kde4 distro to have! |

Anyway, it seems that is fixed now https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maver ... bug/616023 I don't care, too late. You break my video, then you break the deal. |

Kubuntu 10.10 was released with nvidia drivers 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 as one can easly see from https://www.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/ ... cs-drivers and http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/10.1 ... 6.manifest
Further more the bug you referenced was fixed in september... I really do not get what the fuss was about.
Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

I had a similar situation with my motherboard integrated graphics the intel g45 chip. The newer drivers included with kubuntu caused lock ups and I couldn't figure out how to install intel-legacy drivers. The problem was similar with opensuse except there was a very clear guide on how to use intel-legacy drivers online. So all I had to do was change one line in a configuration file and I had 3d desktop features without the system instability. So opensuse is so much better.
