KDE is so buggy

Sat Oct 16, 2010 5:39 pm
I have used KDE for about a mount in Arch Linux. But I had used Gnome in Debian and Ubuntu for about a year. I guess both KDE and Gnome are better than Windows. When I was setting up Gnome applications, I thought it was very hard and time consuming than XP. But once I figure out how to configure Gnome applications, it became configurable and easy.

In KDE, if I found a bug, I have to wait until next KDE release. Even if there was a solution for fixes, those fixes didn't work well for most cases. Maybe this is because I do not have deep understanding of KDE. But I can solve problems in Gnome with simple solutions by other users without deep understanding of GNOME. At least in my experience, there was no simple and clear answers for my KDE or KDE application problems. Since I couldn't find a fix or solution, I feel like it's buggy.

In KDE System Setting, I had experienced that KDE stop responding after I apply KDE setting changes. I am not sure why KDE stops. But I am sure that didn't happened in Gnome at all.

It is my personal opinion, KDE users says that KDE is good because KDE is highly configurable. I want to say that it is a lie. It is very configurable. However, it is very hard to find what to change in where in KDE System Setting. Bad things are that terms in System Setting do now show clear meaning or not showing what it includes. Why do we have font configuration under Application Appearance? Can't you put that right under System Setting? That doesn't harm anything? Why don't we make all configurations accessible in one place? Do you have to categorize the configuration? Is that because you think MS Windows configuration is better?

It is very hard to find useful helps from other users. Most of KDE user's helps is not a solution or direction. Most are usually like "you read this", "see a link" or "add it menu editor". Most o of time, those kinds of answers are worse than nothing because somebody has to spend large amount of time for very simple solutions. Why can't we help like "Set that under where to what"?

Yes, I think that KDE is most buggy and uncomfortable OS that I have ever seen since Windows 95. However. I believe KDE is much faster than Gnome in most PC's hardware( lager than 1GB RAM). KDE has great potential. Maybe I need to spend much more time before my own conclusion about KDE. For now, I do not want to recommend KDE as an replacement of GNOME. I even recommend to stick on GNOME even if it is slower, buggy and not highly configurable as much as KDE. Believe me GNOME is much better than KDE in my first one month experience. What's good of highly configurable KDE if you cannot configure or find easy howtoz?

I must start to write easy howtoz whenever I found solutions or fixes for KDE. Thank you.

I've been using KDE in two machines since KDE 4.2 (when I felt it mature enough for my daily use), and I must say that since KDE 4.3, and even more in 4.4, it rocks, IMHO. I find bugs in several apps, yes, but usually these apps aren't part of the KDE itself (i.e., Amarok or Kdenlive).

You come from GNOME, as yo say, so you are used to the "GNOME-way". GNOME is basically the same in the last three years (this is the time I'm using Linux, so I can't speak before that date), while KDE has made a total revolution, and has not achieved a final form yet.

Coming from Windows, when I begun to use GNOME I was confused. Coming from Ubuntu, when I started to use Debian+KDE 3.5 I felt lost at the beginning as well. And the same story when I came into my first KDE 4.x. But now, I'm lost when I see a GNOME, but fortunately I have some previous experience to help me.

Why don't we make all configurations accessible in one place? Do you have to categorize the configuration?

In GNOME you have two places for configurations (Preferences and System), and each one has its own subcategories, or so it seems to me. And I don't think this is bad, it's just the "GNOME-way" as I said.

And I think that the releases try not only to add new features but also to fix bugs, either in KDE, GNOME, XFCE or whichever other DE.

GNOME 2.x is a mature DE that works fine. If it fits all your needs and you know it well, use it. After all, in the free software world we have freedom of choice.

Yeah I agree that the configuration options are all over the place. I guess you can't have both ease of use and customizability.

I do agree GNOME's settings are easier to find as they are all grouped together, but KDE's settings aren't so hard to locate as to turn me away from it. And both are incredibly easier than Windows. ;D
