First let me introduce my self. I'm gnome user who fall in love with KDE
![]() ![]() Ok first that i'm happy with KDE because it can enable at least more effect than gnome can do based on my SIS Graphic M671 Chipset, but the problem is my modified 2D driver which is customized to work for 1366x768 Resolution is only support in Linux kernel or based 2.6.36. Linux image that i use right now is 2.6.32-25-generic and it's working great with KDE 4.5.1 ( I'm using Mint 9 KDE and update it through Kubuntu Repository backports ) Questions it's mixed questions : 1. Is that any possibility to do an upgrade for recent release without upgrading kernel and x-server? 2. How to fix or maybe improve font rendering in KDE? Honestly in Gnome it's much smoother to see the font ( In desktop environment, etc ) That's the questions that's in my mind ![]() My opinion for future or maybe next KDE and all Kapplication release 1. Try to reduce any unuse system program that maybe we don't need it. Someuser maybe happy with that but sometimes it's too much and can make you system become heavy. Maybe we can try like a manual on / off for each system so poeple can be more flexible to work in KDE. 2. Kontact is such a great application and the usability, but maybe not only me that see the option is too complicated IMO. Also in Kmail, inbox which is too crowded so it's difficult to see or if you planning to read a mail. Maybe we can try to follow the giant like MS Outlook but the interface must be a little bit simpler than now. 3. Kopete is a problem for me. GUI isn't too good and even it's integrate with native address book or etc still it can't be good enough for IM program. Improve the GUI so people can enjoy when they use Kopete. Because if you compare it with other stuff in KDE, kopete is like outdated ![]() 4. Dolphin issue. It's slow and sometimes you must wait for a quite long time just to copy / paste or even empty the trash bin. I don't know which one is wrong. My notebook or the dolphin ![]() 5. i have this issue when i'm using sudo dolphin / konqueror
which is i don't understand but i know there's something wrong The other things is sensational, i love amarok. I love konqueror/rekonq as a 2nd browser.. I will stick with KDE from now on. Best Regards, Martin Lee Sorry if i posting in wrong section, because i can't find a right section regarding my post |

On upgrading KDE without upgrading Kernel or Xorg: AFAIK KDE major versions don't have dependencies on particular Xorg versions (there may be some KWin features that can only be enabled on particular Xorg versions, but it'll detect which you are using and enable/disable features automatically), and I'm sure that it doesn't have any dependencies on particular Kernel versions; so you should be able to install/upgrade KDE without upgrading the Kernel or Xorg.

Most definitely. In Kubuntu there are fresh KDE packages offered between official releases. For example, in Kubuntu 10.10, you can update to 4.5.2 Most Distributions offer this in various ways.
If you are running 10.04 (again, not sure what version of Ubuntu Mint is based on), there is a known bug on this iirc, a bad combination of dbus version that does not get along with KDE 4.5.1 http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451 Again, depending on the distro, the fix comes in different ways. There is a cooment that has instructions to fix it.
This is more a distro-specific thing, as a distro's purpose is to provide what it thinks are a suitable set of tools and applications for its intended audience. Kubuntu for example shoot for having a KDE-centric desktop single-cd install with a general set of tools to suit a wide range of users, with many extras available to be installed. Kubuntu doesn't have a specific tool for this, outside of what is already available in System Settings.
If you need to run a gui application with admin privileges in Kubuntu, you need to use the kdesudo command instead of plain sudo, then you won't get these errors (or the possible ownership/permissions problems that could occur)

Well actually it's based on Kubuntu 10.4 Which is in Backport PPA that don't have any future upgrade for 4.5.2 I was do succeed to move to 4.5.1 using backport and of course i'm happy with it.. Anyway just wondering if i can compile from the scratch to make 4.5.2 working in 10.4 Based kubuntu Thanks for your reply anyway ^^ ![]() |

in 10.04, kde 4.5.1 is not much of a difference from 4.5.2 as it contained some upstream patches iirc that ended up in 4.5.2

sudo GUI-APP will promptly screw up permissions on various files that you are supposed to own. Use kdesudo instead!!!
