Anyway,
I have watched the Social network Recently and it was epic.

That looks like early KDE 3 or possibly even KDE 2. With the right icon theme, appropriate Plasma theme, and using Plastique style KDE 4 could probably obtain a similar appearance though.

The screenshot is a bit strange - the gray wallpaper was the default around 3.1, 3.2, and so is the window deco and the widget theme.

But the icons are not crystal, but look older - KDE 2.something.

Since Mozilla 1.0 was released in 2002, I'm leaning towards it being KDE 3.1 with a non-default icon theme.

As for the "OS", my guess is Slackware 8 which would fit the requirements above, and it was popular at universities back then.

p.s. Kubuntu was first released in 2005

Thank you for that very informative reply!
I think it is Slackware.

It's actually very nice on the part of the makers of the movie that they gave attention to such tiny details. I mean, the story its based on is from the days of KDE 3, but we have kde 4 for a few years now. Just using kde 4 would during the shoot would probably have gone unnoticed, but would not have been true to the movie. GREAT!!! what do u all think??

Well, it is not that unusual to find KDE 3.x on universities to this day. So, the 'attention to detail' could be even accidental :)

True that. There are still some at "my" university, but the Linux workstations are mostly Gnome though (and an old version of Gnome at that).

defiantly KDE 3.0 - 3.1 with the keramic theme and old KDE 2 icons (these were included as a icon theme option in KDE 3 (either way it predates thin keramic.)

It's funny I hated that look when it was new and I still think it looks bad.

It was Debian Lenny. Debian's Firefox fork Iceweasel gave it a away, since it was quite easy to spot.

Iceweasel? It didn't exist back then. In this screenshot, the old Mozilla (now Mozilla Suite - Seamonkey) is shown

Ah sorry, I was talking about the final scene when he keeps refreshing the facebook page. As a Debian user, the older setup seems also really familiar, so my guess is that he uses Debian through the movie.

@acidlee
Awesome, thanks!

In this screenshot KDE appears to be of a newer date than the one in the first sshot.
