Going to Gnome

Thu Nov 25, 2010 11:45 pm
Hello, went thought the effort of making an account just to post this because it has annoyed me enough.

I'm switch to Gnome because of the fact i can't get rid of the little cashew symbol in the corner... Tired the 'I Hate Cashew' fix didn't work for me... Along with the the fact every time I move my mouse to the top corners it either displays all the desktops or windows(depending on the side). Tried a quick Google search to solve the problem but the answer's I got didn't work. And I refuse to use much more time then 10 minutes to figure something out that should be pretty **** easy... Therefore bye bye KDE

Thank you

A more constructive way to spend your effort would be to post in the appropriate forums and ask for help - people are generally very helpful around here. :) Regarding the cashew there's Stealth Cashew, and the second issue can be fixed in System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Screen Edges. But I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

People like different things, and it's good that there are other free desktop/window manager alternatives out there. Hope you'll have a nice time with GNOME.

There are a couple of annoying problems i have found over the course of 2 months but i will NOT move to gnome because i have a strong believe in the KDE devs and community about progressing through the problems. I left KDE once because of the changes from 3.x to 4.x but i tested 4.3, 4.4 and now using 4.5 which i have seen huge enhancements over the course of several months.

I truly believe 4.6 will fix the some or all of the problems i will mention here since just the beta made my eyes go like this --> O.o

1. Easier Sharing - brainstorm.php#idea91668

2. Network Renaming - brainstorm.php#idea91618

3. Better shortcut support - For example making a one key shortcut for the konsole. Eg: The Left ALT or the Left menu button in the right side of the left ALT button.

This 2 have made hell for me everyday. But if i look at the things that KDE has offered me over Gnome, there is no way in hell am going to Gnome.

So that is about it. Better network interface support and for the love of god better sharing support including for windows systems, mac and linux.

Not sure how relevant it is, but for #1 see http://svn.reviewboard.kde.org/r/4320/

Re: Going to Gnome

Very informative at the programming level. What am attacking here is the fact that for the end user which is normally the one that will start rambling about if KDE or Gnome is better than the other, sharing is a major factor. Easier sharing is priority one if KDE wants to kick some serious butt. At the time of writing i just tested, just to make sure it was not my PC 2 more PCs with same result. Very hard to share a simple folder, even from the desktop. So when in a lan a person would look fool trying to show how easy it is to share something in linux.

Although what you posted is very good, like a said, is for a programming level which is not very end user friendly.

For the sharing am also including the fact that sharing a wifi connection is painful also. Like this, try to connect to internet via an ethernet cable, then "try" to share you connection via a wireless card using only the knetwork widget. First you create the connection (ad-hoc, shared method, no password because you are a good person to the lan friends). It will sometimes not shared, not appear or when it appears others wil not be able to connect since they will not see it or IF they do see it it will appear as using a WEP key instead of no key at all. The speed will also appear wrong. Basically a hell. This 2 points

+ Sharing a resource (folder) for other lan users
+ Sharing your wireless/wired connection easily

Will make it very not easy to try to teach others KDE and the benefits. I for one beg that when teaching a class about it, my students do not ask about sharing something since i would probable say they should use Gnome for that.

For 4.6 i mean it seriously when i say this is a priority since next year, with the amount of changes, positives ones, coming to the linux world from many directions, this 2 should be address above many other ideas. They are common uses for any system and have a big deal with the end user.

Update (for whoever might find this info useful one day)

Settings -> Window Behavior -> Screen Edges

Is what got from Google I tried it and it didn't work...

But got it working latter when I found out latter that CCSM (compiz-fusion) setting were actually doing it. So I'm at fault there not KDE.

PS: Thanks for positive reply's this sounds like a good community.
