What's the point of the rating system if you can rate your own topics??
:D

And what's with the reputation system? As far as I know only Sebas now has any reputation at all.

Heheh, I was just wondering what happens when you do the rating :P

I was actually wondering about the system... There's the reputation, topic rating, thanking and stars below the username, and apparently they aren't interrelated.

Thanking, I understand - it gives the person feedback if you found the comment useful without making a "Thanks, that worked!" post. I think Ubuntu forums have that.

The thread rating system is a fun little thing. I guess you could give yourself 5 stars, but no one will know who did it. So I guess it would make sense to rate all your threads with 5 stars and then let people who don't like you vote you down, I guess...

I'm assuming the stars represent post count, but moderators and administrators have a whole bunch of stars even if they posted only once. Also, to turn from a "Newbie" to a "Junior Member," you need to have one post - which is pretty silly.

I honestly have no idea what reputation could be used for. With reputation, you either post a comment under your name and optionally add or subtract one point. So let's see... Why would you bother posting a comment there without giving a rating? (Instead of making a post, for example) So "neutral is probably useless. What about subtracting a point? That's pretty mean, especially if you post under your name, and there's a threat of retaliation. And what would warrant a +1? "A++ would ask for help again!!!" ?

Well, I'm guessing that since the forum is new, there's a bunch of features there to just try out and see what works and what doesn't. We'll just have to wait and see what happens when there will be more people.

Well, then let me explain a bit of them
Thanking, I understand - it gives the person feedback if you found the comment useful without making a "Thanks, that worked!" post. I think Ubuntu forums have that.

Exactly, Thanks is related to a specific post from a specific user. You will only see it under the thanked post, nowhere else.
The thread rating system is a fun little thing. I guess you could give yourself 5 stars, but no one will know who did it. So I guess it would make sense to rate all your threads with 5 stars and then let people who don't like you vote you down, I guess...

See it more like an important rating. If it is really important to you, go for it and vote. And you are right, if it isn't that important for others, they will vote it down.
That's all about it.
I'm assuming the stars represent post count, but moderators and administrators have a whole bunch of stars even if they posted only once. Also, to turn from a "Newbie" to a "Junior Member," you need to have one post - which is pretty silly.

Like in other boards, yes. The more posts, the more stars on your name. Certain roles have more stars right from the start. About the newbie and junior member thing, well, i think it is okay to say, you are registered but didn't post anything so you are a newbie. When you post something, you imadiately are a junior.
I honestly have no idea what reputation could be used for. With reputation, you either post a comment under your name and optionally add or subtract one point. So let's see... I guess everybody knows ebay and its reputation system. So if you get the overall impression, what i write is not helpful or friendly at all, go to my profile and make a reputation with a comment about why you think i deserve this -1.
Or the other way around, of course ;)
That simply gives an overview to a specific author and how well he does his part on this board.

Absolutely :)

if one meber gets to many bad ratings whill there be any form of consequences for that member?

Or the other way around, any postive consequence for those who gets a high rating?

It's quite dangerous to make assumptions about 'everybody'!

(I didn't, for one)

Well, if someone really behaves that bad to deserve the bad reputation i am sure that it will get through to us moderators.
But of course we also rely on the community. It's always a matter of how responsible you use the tools we provide. But for sure everything will be checked before the necessary steps are taken.
At least, this is a community forum, so you also have the responsibility of how well it will run.

Ok, then as an explanation:
With the reputation you can visit a users profile and see all of the reputations made, together with the vote that was made on it.
You have the possibility to add a reputation to a person, either a positive(+1 or +2), a neutral(0) or a negative(-1 or -2) one.
Along with it you add a comment. Let's say:
-Visit neverendingos profile
-see his reputations (he has none)
-add a new reputation (-1, because he didn't explained reputations well enough)
-do this by clicking "rate user"
-fill in the required fields
-that was it
Now everybody visiting the profile will see that the user has a bad reputation because he was not good enough to explain certain things, whatever you typed in the comment.
So if someone is really great doing in helping with compositing things for example, someone from the community might step up and add a reputation "+2 - he does know all about compositing".
That would be helpful for other members to (maybe) trust more in the answers of this specific user.

Hope this helps.

Only you can see your warning level, and considering yours is 0%, you're probably quite benign :-)

0% means you have no outstanding warnings, that is what everyone starts on.

Just by not following the rules, being rude, spamming... things you shouldn't do in a public forum.

I noticed a while ago that I had received one reputation-point (woohoo!). But I just noticed that my reputation is back at zero (booooo!). I went and check my control panel to see that did I receive negative reputation or something. But no. It says that I have no reputation, positive or otherwise.

What happened?

Hi Janne. If you give a reputation-point to someone you can remove it later on if you come in second thoughts why you gave the point in the first place.
