It should be very rare for everything to freeze. If one application freezes, it is usually enough to hit ctrl+esc. Your mouse should turn into a skull and crossbones. Just click on the window you want to kill. This is normally not necessary, though, since if you click on the "x" button in the top-right corner of the window, and the window is frozen, your system will detect that it is frozen and ask you if you want to force quit it.

If your entire system is totally frozen, which I repeat should almost never happen, then you should use ctrl+alt+backspace twice quickly (you should hear a loud beep after the first time). You should only need to do this when you cannot use your keyboard or mouse. If that doesn't help then you have a really serious problem and you need to hit the power button on the computer case.

If your computer is running slowly and you want to see what is the cause, hit ctrl+esc. This will bring up a list of processes.

Another option is to hit ctrl+alt+f1, log in there, then type "top" and hit enter to see what is causing problems. Hit ctrl+c to stop top, then exit to logout, then ctrl+alt+f7 to get back your windows.

One of the big problems with Windows is that individual applications control their own windows. This is not the case with KDE, windows are controlled by the window manager (called kwin). This means that even if the application is frozen, you can still move the window, close it, resize it, minimize it, switch to a different application, and so on. So unlike window where you need to go into the task manager to deal with a frozen window, you can deal with it using a simple mouse click in KDE.

Which version of openSUSE are you using? Are there specific programs that are freezing, or specific things you are doing when the freeze happens? Applications freeze from time to time, but I don't recall the last time my entire system froze.

Which version of Amarok are you using? if you are using KDE 4.5, that means you must be using the KDE:Release:45 repository. Make sure you selected "Switch System Packages to the version in this repository" for that repository in the software manager.

hit CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE a couple times if your completely stuck. this should log you out and you can then log back in. or replace the backspace with the DELETE button and it will reboot the computer

Hey

My first post!

If everything is freezing then you should run a few RAM tests to ensure it isnt faulty. You'd be suprised at how often faulty ram is the cause of these problems.

Thanks,

Al.
